Just a quick question about the 960 Pro

I just installed it in an Asus Maximus Hero X, it has a heatsink on it, right above the video card.
When I game, I've seen its temps hit 48-52c
Is that a safe temperature? It idles around 30c

Plenty safe. Those are actually normal temps for one without an aftermarket cooler on it. Plus, it has built-in safety features to throttle if it gets too hot, but I think it's throttle point is when it hits 70c. You are good to go.

Edit:

I think the actual throttle temp is higher than 70c. I can't find what that number is, but Samsung lists the product specs on it's website, and lists the operating temperature as 0c to 70c. None of the reviews I have seen say what the temperature is when it throttles, just that it can longer than its predecessor.

Since your using such an expensive NVme drive why not beef it out if you have the spare pci-e slot?

I have my 960Pro on a pci-e using the one supplied by my motherboard, and it rarely breaks 40c even under load.
I believe that kryos is top of the line for the same feature of mine so it should do the same.

But all IC's are stated that for every 10C drop in temperature, you effectively double the life of said IC.

That's the adapter I use for my 960 EVO as well. It's really not needed for home users, but it does knock the temps down quite a bit.

Here's a discussion about it (post #41 shows the temps a user gets, and I get about the same temps as well):

" . . . really not needed for home users . . . "

I probably agree; there are a lot of things we don't really "need." But it does "knock down the temps" on the NVMe. And further -- it's a relatively cheap kit accessory. I may have paid $30 to $35 for each of mine. [For the Kryo.M.2]. Is that too much spending, for the computer I took a year to plan, build and tweak? Chump change!

You could rig your own cooling solution, but there are temptations to use ceramic interface material -- permanently glued to the NVME's chips. Alternatively, there are thermal pads which cost next to nothing while amenable to cutting, stacking -- shaping, and those can be easily removed at any time. You could buy copper heatsinks about the size of a 40mm fan, and use those. At some point, you might choose to use a wire tie to secure the heatsink to the NVMe, but I'm only guessing that it would work. I don't see why not.

Why not just buy the AquaComputer kit?

So, I have 5 computers, all with hom made heatsinks on my 960 EVO's. I just take old heat sinks from the chipsets of old motherboards (any the right size will do), use thermal pads (2 for like $7 on newegg) and zip ties. Just use the M.2 slot that has room above it. The HSF is so big that with any case ventilation, its fine. No more than 50C. And it was throttling before I did this. Running DC has a lot of constant IO, and that heated this thing up like a furnace.

Here is a really bad picture of one of the 5 in place.

And the pieces:

And here is a different one, and a better picture, and you can see the thermal pad and zip ties !! And this box has 2 video cards, one in slot in, and one in slot 3, and its between them.
