so is buying a PCIe 4.0 NVMe pretty much a waste of time?...I currently have a Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD...for my upcoming Zen 3 5800X build should I keep that drive or upgrade to a PCIe 3 NVMe?...this is mostly for gaming
If asking, you likely wouldn't notice any real-world difference between your SATA SSD or a PCIe 3.0 (or 4.0) drive.

That said, since you are paying a pretty penny to build a new PC at launch, I'd personally go with a 500 GB - 1 TB NVMe drive, and use the 860 EVO for game / program storage. You can get good performance NVMe 500 GB versions starting around $55.

WD SN750, Adata SX8200 PRO, Corsair MP510, Samsung 970 EVO plus / 980 PRO, WD SN550, SK Hynix P31, Kingston KC2000 / KC2500 are all good models.

There are others from Sabrent, Team Group, Silicon Power, etc, but if I were buying a new drive, I'd go with one of the models I listed above.

Like which ones?
Mainly the upcoming Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus and the Adata ones. These should be as fast or faster than the Samsung 980 Pro, and likely cheaper. There likely will be other Phison E18 based drives coming out after the Sabrent.

the new Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus is getting excellent reviews across the board...I'm tempted to pick one up (even though it's not really going to provide me any tangible benefits in gaming load times etc)...I think it's the first drive to use the new Phison PS5018-E18 controller...what is the model number for the new Adata drive?

for consumer drives (used mainly for gaming) are there any issues with using TLC?...or is getting an MLC drive worth the price premium?

I think the upcoming Adata drive is the Gammix S70, but it uses a different controller.

I'm waiting on reviews for the WD SN850. It will be pretty funny if it takes the performance crown from the 980 Pro.

I'm so glad we have more and more high end drives with fully custom controllers coming out.

The impending market diversity is excellent.

Yeah, good advances for the most part. As for the performance crown, I think the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus will take it(already shown to be faster than the 980 Pro) though IDK whether it or the SN850 will be out first.
