the overall well-roundedness of the 830s won me over, so news of an 840 series is pretty exciting, 100K/90K read/write IOPs is pretty impressive up from 80K/36K of the 830...

that being said, I'd really rather see improvements in price/capacity more than anything and would very much love to jump at the chance to upgrade to 2 x 512GB (or better) if I could do it for less than $500

Thanks for the update. Samsung has pretty reasonable retail pricing, boosted speeds a bit while nearly halving the power. Looks like Samsung has decided to crank up the pressure on the competition. I guess we'll have to wait to see how the new Marvell controller works out.

Looks like the best drive out there, bar none, and might even be worth paying the MSRP of $270.

Man, how far have we come since the Intel X-25M and Indilinx-based SSDs were on the market just 3 years ago? Back then, the benchmarks were bumping into the SATA 3Gbps wall, and SATA 6Gbps must have seemed like a lot of headroom. Now every SSD is bumping into the 6Gbps wall and we need another SATA standard to bust through it.

The evolution of SSDs over the past 3 years have been amazing.

Samsung has also announced the SSD 840, designed with triple-level cell (TLC) NAND and intended for mainstream use. We have not seen specifications yet for the SSD 840

And I almost pulled the trigger on an 830 just days ago. Only reason I didn't is because the price on them went up $20 so I figured I'd wait for it to come back down. I guess I'll wait and see what the price/availability of these new drives is.

Yeah, I know day-to-day operations hasn't hit the 6 Gbps wall yet. And I know that one SSD will subjectivly "feel" about as fast as another nowadays. I was thinking more in terms of the upper limits of what SSDs speeds has achieved since 3 years ago.

This is great, 100k flops on the 840 professional edition.

The 830 512GB debuted at 1200 dollars. Then it became 700 dollars for a long time until recently,, if your lucky you find one for 600 bucks .

This 840 512GB doesnt raise capacity but it raises the performance bar. Im calling 700 dollars on this one. The pro model.

The 840 Pro is $600, a lot better than the original price of last gen 512GB drives, but pretty expensive compared to the current competition. $500 would be more competitive.

I was considering going for an a 830 but now I will have to wait.

It would be very interesting to see where the 840 lands compared to the 830 and the 840 Pro. Both in benchmarks and price.

According to storagereview the controller runs 50MHz faster than the 830
I wonder how hot these run ...
Maybe polling the smart value during testing would yield interesting results.

well they use half the power, I don't think heat would be an issue
