According to storagereview the controller runs 50MHz faster than the 830
I wonder how hot these run ...
Maybe polling the smart value during testing would yield interesting results.

80MHz faster (220MHz vs 300MHz) but at a smaller process node and different architecture (ARM9 vs ARM R4)

I have a 256GB 830 SSD, it doesn't even get warm in normal use - maybe if you did a constant write operation for hours it might possibly warm up....

The main thing I take away from this is not the speed bump, etc., but the fact they are targeting the consumer and pro / enterprise market with a single product range (albeit somewhat significant differences in memory on the Pro devices). Hopefully this can only result in better firmware being available at both business and consumer level, although could also mean many frequent updates in the early days of the product.

As for the evolution of the SSD market, things normally do evolve quickly in the early days of a new technology - its keeping that momentum going that's the hard part, especially when you start getting close to / pushing the limits.
The last big thing in normal HDD storage was probably the move to glass platters, and that become common more than 10 years ago now. But from the start of the 80's onwards (where HDDs really started becoming a mainstream product) the jumps in reducing the size and increasing reliability sort of led to the focus of more capacity which from the early/mid-90s became the main thing to improve - from that point onwards not a lot has changed.

Hopefully the SSD market can replicate that kind of progress in terms of the fact that we now have reliability and performance levels, now its time to maintain those levels and push for capacity.

I got a 128GB 830 a few weeks ago for a fantastic price (cheaper than even the M4 and various OCZ drives at the same capacity), so I don’t have buyer’s remorse to see the 840 come out.

As for temperatures/power usage, these are already trivial on SSDs, especially on a system with front intake fans.

As an aside, I found this benchmark interesting:

For a mechanical drive, the 1TB VelociRaptor does exceptionally well here.

I wanted to buy a Plextor M5P, but the results of the 840 Pro are really good.
How can I compare the "Performance Over Time and TRIM" benchmark?
My new SSD should have a good performance even if it is under heavy workload or old.

Anyone know how many "wear level count"/"program-erase cycles" are the new SSDs rated to do ? (the TLC and the PRO)

I am specially interested in knowing the TLC's p/e cycle count rating.

(Samsung 830/Crucial M4 are rated 3000, Intel 520 is rated 5000)

Where my main concern is that the 840 will be the first out, and will allow other manufacture to really refine their offerings, and possible beat samsung.

The them making 100% everything in their drive, I really have made up my mind that they will be the choice of the future for good speed and more important - reliability.

With some time it is possible intel/crucial can really refine their performane, or develop a new controller that smoke the 840 out of the water.

I would have liked to see samsung wait a bit until others released theirs and learned from it.

Samsung 840 (TLC) is supposed to have ~1000 p/e rated cycles.

It is not that bad.

Good to see improvements being made, only had my Samsung 830 256GB a few months, if I was buying new I would probally get the 840 PRO. The 5 year warranty is kind of appealing.

Will be interesting to see how well the other manufacturers new SSD's perform in comparison.

Just 1000? This value is a bit low, isn't it?

It will depend on write amplification.

I rarely see anyone with SSD who have used more than 5% of the SSD rated life within the first year, (on SSDs rated 3000).

This new TLC drive could also be great for storage and backups.

Hopefully it will be significantly cheaper than its MSRP price.
