I finally pulled the trigger, after my 1.5% back on the credit card it was less than $.015 per GB! So this is the lowest price per GB ever on a HD that I've seen

I'm sure there's benchmarks & comparison's somewhere about this drive & the $99 WD 640GB.
Does the 2x320GB have much of an advantage over a 3x250GB?

depends on the benchmark (read storagereview). the 640 has no weak areas while the 750 has one or two iirc

This acutally depends.


the 750gb f1 is based on the same design as the 1TB f1 drive. the 1TB drive uses 350 gb platters, and its possible and highly likely that the 750gb is just a "Stroked" version using only the outer part of the 3 platters

(both drives are 3 platters , just one is 750 and the other is 1TB). since the outer parts of platters are actually faster, this could potentially be the fastest drive samsung makes if its just a stroked 1TB.

Even if it was just a normal 250gb platter , it sitll wouldnt be a huge difference, plus the samsung has 32mb cache over the WD 16mb.

I purchased this drive from ZZF a little while back, just some tips if you are an nForce3 Ultra owner:

• Do no use the nVidia SATA / IDE drivers with this drive, it will cause your system not to boot.
• You will not be able to restart your computer, in order for your computer to reboot, you will need to do a shutdown / power off and then power it back on instead of a restart.

I wonder if this behavior will in anyway show up in a Tivo HD? I am fairly sure Tivo HD uses Linux. No idea on chipset.

It is isolated to certain nForce chipsets and possibly other old SATA controllers. The TiVo HD does not use nForce chipsets, afaik. My TiVo HD requires some special type of WD "My DVR" eSata drive to get extra space.

I too bought 2 drives from ZZF. They're great drives, quiet, cool and fast. The biggest issue is not the drives, but the MB/drivers in my case. I have a 965 board, and the IHC8 chipset apparently does some things that aren't well-behaved in all OSes. WinXP appears to not deal with AHCI turned on. Ubuntu (8.04 only) appears to only work with AHCI turned on when using channels 1/2 and/or 3/4. If you only use 5 and 6, no problem. If you use the IDE JMicron controller, you're in for another world of fun, depending upon what you're installing.

BTW, depending upon your OS, the IHC7/8/9 families of controllers and JMicron controllers are both sources of challenges, especially if you're in a no floppy mode with XP. Slipstreaming in that case is your only solution, and you better have a rev 0 version of XP lying around. (I do fortunately)

that is why i've stuck with ich7

it is not dtrue of ich7 since ich7 has a real ATA controller. so they dont have jmicron bridges. that said, you could just buy a sata optical drive.

Today's Newegg newsleter also has it for $109.00 with a $10.00 off promo code.
I got one last week from there at $119.00 and so far, so good. I have it mounted in a Vantec eSATA/USB2 external case as a backup drive. I transferred approx 140 GB to it and no overheating or other problems noted.
Oh and I called the Egg and they agreed to credit me the $10.00 :thumbsup:
