Thanks sempur. I think I better update mine. I subsequently read on another forum that Dec 2010 drives will need it. That same forum had a link to the US firmware on the Seagate site that worked. That thread also said the Japanese version of the firmware does update the version number. I'm not sure I understand the need for different language versions anyway; does firmware contain error messages?
I'm hoping I don't have any lost data. The disk is in an HTPC and is used just for movies so no sector is ever written more than once except for Windows defrag which I'm guessing is also pretty much non-existant since its all large files written sequentially one at a time.
