Engadget is stupid.

They think it's the same screen as the Nexus/Note, but it's not. As I said, Plus = no Pentile. Hence the conformity of names, at least on the slide, with the SGS2 display name (also Plus/no Pentile) and not the Nexus/Note's (which are also different resolutions from each other).

Fake slide is fake.

The 32nm Exynos 4212 is sampled, they can start a low volume production since it's in house production. I am taking bets that they show it off at MWC. but I don't think it wll be an all new phone. Depending on how long it takes them to address yield issues should there be any, they could start pumping out high volumes at the end of the year at worst or they could be at it by November if all goes by plan.

Just a hunch but I don't think Samsung had enough time to devise an all new SGS3. Samsung already announced the SGS2 LTE HD for the domestic market, so they will probably adapt Apple's time/cost cutting approach. Use the existing design and layout and improve upon individual components and hit the market. We could see a SGS2+ or a similar revision rather than an all new SGS3 even if it may bare the name SGS3. Since they are the largest memory OEM and the 2nd largest chip OEM, they can get volume fast and do domestic lauch in March, European in June, you know the drill... From Samsung's perspective, they could squeeze even more profits from the mobile sector with that approach since the rest of the company isn't doing too well.

Off topic: In the past, trolls responsible for this FUD used to smoke meth and dreamed up next gen phones but they always got the resolution wrong because they hit the pipe and kept repeating the 1024x768 resolution for each new phone rumor they put out. Perhaps the stuff they smoke now isn't as potent as it used to be or they simply wised up and can produce more advanced FUD. Even worse is that this crap can make it past certain sites and they will post it, how naive are they...

lol.

the only problem I have with this is the 12mp camera.

seriously? wtf good does that do? 8mp is already waaaaay too much on a dinky cell phone CCD. what the heck kind of CCD can they cram in there, anyway? You would think on a phone that can hold a 4.6" display, they would be able to cram a slightly larger CCD, reduce the MP and increase the tangible quality, for once.

screw the consumer that is wowed by simple numbers. They were easily-enough misled in thinking that MP was so damn important, time to re-educate them and start touting the actual size of the CCD. "Ours is Bigger!" is easy enough for most market-duped consumers to swallow.

I've read there is an htc phone in the works with a 12mp camera that takes photos in raw format

No, it's already been known that the SGS3 would be shown off next year. Just what exactly is more uncertain. SGS2 came out much earlier this year, and they've had more than enough time to develop a SGS3. Yearly cycles is about right.

raw shmraw. if the CCD is garbage size, then it really doesn't matter after that.

seriously, some amazing things can be done with contemporary cell phone imaging, but why not get back to the basics--the hardware, and work on some real improvement?

There is not enough space in the timeline for both the SGS2 HD LTE (lol at these names) and a SGS3. They can still do do some renaming between now and then.

Huh, the LTE one is out like now, through the end of the year in Korea at least, and it is effectively just a spec bumped GS2. The GS3 will likely be shown off at MWC, released later in that year.

Neither the SGS2 LTE nor the SGS2 HD LTE have launched yet. There has only been an announcement for the domestic market with a pending launch date.

Not surprised there is much confusion, it mistakenly reported that the version headed to Canada is LTE but it turned out to be a "regular" SGS2. Samsung has no reason to announce and show phones they don't plan to launch.

At the announcement they said both phones are clocked at 1.5GHz. When they announced the new Exynos 4212, they said it will clock at 1.5GHz. Putting two and two together, the SGS2 HD LTE will have the Exynos 4212.

And this wouldn't be bad at all. I don't care if they keep the same design. Bumping up the resolution, adding the new Exynos and better connectivity, possibly even ICS at launch make this a really good phone. If they stick with last year's launch schedule it will suck for us again. It probably won't be compatible with T-Mobile at the initial launch so it's out of my reach anyway, at least with the initial pricing.

Personally I can't wait to see the next gen clash, at least 3 next gen platforms will launch before H1 2012 is over.

Also, going by the release of the Galaxy S2 overseas, people were paying close to $900 USD at launch for the phone. Then it settled down to $800 or so I think. I would buy an international phone, but no way I am paying $800 for one.

It was $800 pretty much from the beginning if you preordered. It's been down to $600 for sometime now. That's the same price as a nonsubsidized SGS2 from the carriers.

Surprisingly the width is identical to the 4.3" sgs2, though it is 8mm taller than the sgs2.

Btw since ics is getting rid of the hardware buttons how do you access the menu section in an app if the 3 bottom buttons are back/home/multitask?

not sure, HC only has the 3 buttons, depends on the app where it pops up, for the market its the top right, same with maps. some only have the ap settings

Few more tidbits.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...eam-sandwich-phone-sorry-prime-is-not-likely/

* OMAP 4460 processor, Update: underclocked to 1.2GHz probably for stability (leaving quite a bit of room for overclocking) which is rated at 1.5GHz (it's unclear if Google will underclock it or not - BGR seemed to think it'll be clocked at 1.2GHz, but our source thinks otherwise). Therefore, we're going to say the processor model is confirmed, pending exact clock speed clarification
* 32GB internal storage
* no SD card slot (like the Nexus S, argh)
* LED notification (unlike the Nexus S)
* 1GB RAM
* LTE
* NFC
* 1080p HD recording @30fps
* 5MP rear camera
* possibly some sort of a time lapse feature
* Ice Cream Sandwich confirmed as Android 4.0
* Internally, the Verizon Nexus is known as Tuna/Tuna 4G (board/model) as well as Toro (product/device)
* Galaxy Nexus name
* large screen - we all take 4.65 or so for granted, but I wasn't able to confirm the exact size, so I am only including things we know

OMAP4460, but underclocked to 1.2Ghz. Not really liking the no sdcard slot, but with 32GB of internal storage, I think I could live without it, especially with various cloud based services. Its not a trend I like seeing though.

OMAP4460=PowerVR SGX 540, same GPU as last year's Nexus. While that's a good indicator of ICS efficiency, the hardware is not a good value. If one must have ICS and official updates by all means, go get it. If that chip can push ICS smoothly on a HD screen then SGS2 updated to ICS should blaze through at WVGA and with better hardware.

What I'm really wondering about at this point is whether the DAC is back to Wolfson. That could be a big nerd win over SGS2.

edit -- I'd seen the Android Police piece before, but hadn't looked at the comments. OMG the number of people crying about the lack of SD card is astounding.

Ditto.
I wonder if marketing surveys or something are showing that a majority of people never even use their SD slots, and so makers are starting to jettison them to shave off a tiny bit of cost?

Nice, OMAP4460. Strange about underclock unless that screen eats battery. Disappointing no SD slot.

no sd slot. hmmm.

--so, the sgs2 can go up to (with sdxc confirmed to work) 80gb, and more and more in the future, faster SoC but slower GPU?

--i like the fact that SGS2 is smaller (sgs2 is starting to feel a bit big to me, haha), and with ICS presumably updatable soon enough, I'm not sure what I'd be missing out on

--lower resolution on SGS2, but "better camera," same video recording capability, perhaps.

outside of the purported GSM/CDMA version with LTE, I see no reason, personally, to want this. :\

true. if cloud storage could be effectively utilized with no cost--or at least, single cost of entry, cost to upgrade or whatever, I see how that would be great--

instant cloud backup = win

this is one of the main features that makes the Kindle Fire so sexy to me.
