speedwise on the S2. Has it disappointed you yet?

Not at all, its the fastest phone out a far as I know.

i've been playing dead space and it runs very smooth. So does ff7 on my psx emulator (fpse) in fact, if I unlock the framerate, I can blow through boring parts, as it ran at about, 200 fps (3 to 4 times faster than normal)

There's no lag at all in the os, and every app runs very smooth. (exception of how long it takes the google voice app to launch, a prob with the app, not the phone)

Edit: I should mention that I hated the stock rom. It was plenty fast, but had vlingo tied to double click home button. Got rid of that crap after a day. It runs cm7 super smooth, and currently running unnamed.

For all the AT&T sg sII.. Did you remove AP mobile from your phone?

I heard that app was a huge pain in the ass regarding battery and data drain.

The whole stock rom was a mess. Although, when i did run it for a day or two, my battery wasn't terrible. But it was definitely better with CM7 and unnamed.

If you get this phone, at least install unnamed. I think the phone sucks stock.

I want to wait until my warranty expires until I root with a custom rom.

Until then I am going to update to the latest kernel which is 2.3.6 at the moment and try to kill off all the rogue apps.

because IPS has accurate colors? why do people want IPS panels and want color calibration on their LCD monitors? why do consumers love glossy screens and over saturated RGB?

why do consumers want bass heavy boomy low quality earbuds like Beats audio whereas audio enthusiasts like more accurate balanced sounding devices?

IPS isn't inherently more accurate than SAMOLED and it has a heck of a lot of downsides. There is a reason all serious av enthusiasts use Plasma displays, even at it's best LCD still can't display black and has pitiful response times. AMOLED has many of the advantages of Plasma without the high power consumption which makes it the perfect display technology for smartphones.

My SGS2 was a couple days old when I first flashed my rom. Flashing the rom is not a one way street. You can go back to the stock rom if needed....Well I guess not if the phone won't even boot up.

I'm on AT&T and have had this phone since Black Friday. It runs on my wireless network everyday. I've not noticed any battery issues, but I'm not streaming music or videos with it. I use it to occasionally surf the net or check email if I'm out-of-the office, so I'm not excessive with data usage. I do charge it each night.

This is a bad idea. By the time your warranty expires, your phone will be on the verge of obsolescence. Even if you brick your phone, they have no way to tell how it happened.

Root and mod away. If your against it then i wouldnt recommend android.

I thought about this but I been thinking...

Rooting the phone and having super user access could allow rogue apps to inflict potentially very harmful damage to the phone.

What do you think about this?

if you don't install random apps on your phone, it isn't an issue. think about it this way. Samsung is the biggest OEM in the android business right now and they're selling their phones to you with an unlocked bootloader. they're practically begging for you to root, grab a custom recovery and custom kernel, and do as you please.

I see.

Just curious what kernel/custom rom are you using?

Superuser is specifically used to prevent random programs from getting root access. Think of it as a firewall for root access.

a bit of a misunderstanding but you have to get super user separately right?

Just rooting it does not automatically give super user?

Offically no superuser isnt root itself. However every root method i have ever seen uses it and installs it when rooting.

Why do audiophiles pick a metal coat hanger over a $100+ "premium" cable in a blind test, but still spend $100+ on the cable? Preception of the device, and perception of other people thinking they are "superior".

Actually, I just got my SGS2 on Wednesday and it's not the same one you have. I have the Sprint version so it probably won't help you. I'm using Calkulin's E4GT v2.7

Tbf it's probably hard to route metal coat hangers to all your speakers.

you're arguing that IPS isn't way superior to TN panels? really?

Your the one installing the apps. You have to grant root access to each individual app that requests root.

example:

that being said, this thread in general seems to be getting off track.

The SGS2 is a great device with awesome specs. IMO the biggest problem with android in general is fragmentation, and installing a custom ROM like cyanogemod is the answer, and this phone runs CM7 beautifully.

If your trying out android for the first time, i would consider getting a used captivate on craigslist, and play around with that to see if you like it. Specs are still pretty good, and CM7/MIUI and now ICS can run on it.

Im sure you can get this for around 100 bucks, and if you decide to upgrade, you can always sell it back to someone else for around the same amount.
