Are we done with high end Android phone with <4.5" screens? Every new announcement and rumor now seems to be 4.7" and up. Is the SGSII the last 4.3"??

I can only compare to my 3.5" iPod touch so it's a bit hard to imagine how it is to walk around with, but these almost 5 inch phones sound a bit too big. 4.3" seemed like a good size, but that appeared to be a stop-gap on this ever escalating screen size race.

I held out on the SGS2 for the nexus, but didn't go with that after all. And that was already pretty huge. Now if all (decent..) phones are 5inches by the time I buy a smartphone I'm not sure I want one. Unless I get an iPhone I guess..
Ugh, stupid spec race.

I have a Galaxy Nexus, and I used to have an OG Droid. The Galaxy fits easier in my pocket. It's thin and the rounded edges (and to a very small extent, the slight curve) all make it an easier and more comfortable fit in my pockets. I'm 5'11'', I don't wear baggy pants or skinny jeans and I've had no issues with the size of this phone.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but to my knowledge the new 4.7-4.8" phones are going to be the same dimensions as the 4.3"-ers of the last generation. It's just the hard buttons have been replaced with more screen.

Only the Galaxy Nexus. I would say Galaxy Nexus is more like 4.4-4.5" inch screen phone because of the lack of buttons. Other announced 4.7" phones still have buttons.

Wait, you mean those new HTC phones have hardware buttons?

capacitive buttons. Galaxy Nexus only has onscreen soft/virtual buttons. HTC One S and others will have capacitive buttons still because it's used by HTC Sense UI 4.0 overlay. So the HTC phones will be bigger because of the buttons.

yup. Google does something (cool I think, but that is of course debatable), and the OEMs disregard it and do their own crap. For fairly inexplicable reasons. These phones will be pretty huge.

Actually, the One X is 134.36 tall vs Galaxy Nexus at 135.5, so it's actually the hTC phone that is shorter, and since the screen is used for, well, screen, images are larger than the Nexus and we get the best of both worlds.

Would you not consider the One S a premium device? The main difference between the S and X are the screen but you don't seem to want a screen larger than 4.3in anyway!

I would prefer to have capacitive buttons that are always there. Nothing wrong with that.

Not me. The added screen space is very nice for watching videos. That's a deal breaker for me (I watch a lot of video on my phone).

Well that's nice, I'll have to look into it. I skip over HTC news since they're not android phones, but Sense phones. I'm not interested in that skinned up mess they make. Do they at least have unlocked bootloaders now? Would still have to wait for a decent ROM for it, which may or may not ever happen.

The word from several reviewers so far is that they've taken Sense 4.0 in the right direction. It's supposed to be MUCH lighter, but still has the things that make it beneficial (endless rotation through 7 screens, lock ring, etc). I'm kinda put out by the lack of SD card, but I think 32 will do for me, but not being able to remove the battery for a hard reboot when things get squirrely will take a while longer for me to get over. Also, I'm definitely going for the XL with Krait if I go with one of these.
I just think that the GS3 is going to have Samsung's quad core A9, and I'd like to be on A15 (or equivalent).

+1

My SGS2 is about as big as i would go for a phone, and i wouldnt mind maybe a tad smaller.

Also, a 1080p screen just sounds ridiculous. That just sounds like overkill to me.

Design finalized and going to production? Pre-orders expected to be at an all time high.

Without a doubt, the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy S II smartphones were pretty cool from many aspects when they were announced. However, that both otherwise high-end devices were made out of plastic was somewhat disappointing. Thankfully, the Samsung Galaxy S III might set a new standard as the smartphone will sport a ceramic body, if rumors are to be believed. Furthermore, Eldar Murtazin now claims that the design of the Samsung Galaxy S III has been finalized, suggesting that production of the device is ready to kick off.

But the ceramic casing is expected to be only one of the device's several premium features. Rumors claim that the smartphone will be only 7 millimeters thick, yet packed with processing power delivered by a quad-core processor. The display on the Galaxy S III is rumored to be 4.8 inches in diagonal and will most likely sport HD resolution.

No wonder that carriers are already very interested in offering the Samsung Galaxy S III. According to Murtazin, a record number of Galaxy S III units have already been reserved by carriers and retailers, which makes it the most pre-ordered Galaxy smartphone to date. Last but not least, Eldar reassures us that the smartphone should be out by June of this year. Now who is getting one?

Drool worthy. I've heard some rumors that say the 4.8in screen will be 1080p, but that seems . . . optimistic. If they pull it off though, damn! So much for Apple's pride and joy.

I have doubts that the screen would be 1080p. That would mean that the dpi of the screen would be roughly 460 DPI, which seems unlikely, even if the display were PenTile. It may be possible to make a screen like that, but not in the quantities that Samsung would need, nor at a cost that would make it feasible to include in any device.

Honestly, I find the potential for a ceramic body far more intriguing. Normally ceramics would be too brittle for something like a phone that could be easily dropped, but if Samsung has solved that problem it has implications for a number of fields other than mobile devices.

Meh...If it's not A15, me no want.
All the remaining specs are nothing but fillers.

Thinking its too early for Exynos 5250, but Exynos 4412 won't be any slouch. And should definitely send Nvidia back to the low end scrap heap with Tegra 3 again.

RGB pentile, 720p(or more), A15 are the big ones for me.
Whats the big deal with a ceramic body, anyway?

would the S4 satisfy you since its an A15 like core? All I want is an S4 with either Adreno 3 series graphics or power VR 6 series.

No, it wont.
I only want either Exynos 5250, OMAP5, or Intel.
All others are irrelevant.

For Android, I only stick with the ASUS, Samsung, or the Google Nexus brand.
All others are irrelevant.

I'm curious as to why you say that about ceramic. There are some extremely strong and durable ceramics out there these days. There's really no problem for Samsung to solve other than the cost of these materials. I'm more surprised than anything that they're cheap enough now to include in a cell phone.
