Marques Brownlee: Galaxy S6 Review!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mhvv2-iCKao

Summary of the review:
  • Best display on any smartphone, period.
  • Best camera on any smartphone, period. He initially said it ties with the iPhone 6's camera, but then says that he thinks the Galaxy S6's camera is superior.
  • Battery life has been inconsistent, but still pretty good.
  • He hasn't gotten the UI to lag yet (except the Flipboard briefing widget on the left hand side of the homescreen... everyone needs to disable that useless widget TBH).
  • The fingerprint scanner has been greatly improved

Not sure you actually watched the same review. You're generally right, but he warns that the battery life is really inconsistent and sometimes dies far too soon -- he talks about the phone going dead in his pocket.

The GS6 is indeed a good phone, but that battery life is a major concern for some people.

I've often said if only I could get an iphone with android...

I still don't understand this from Applesexuals.

Aside from the bottom, the S6 looks like a Galaxy S5 on the front with a glass back. Hell, it looks like an Ativ S just with different materials.

It is a rectangular block with rounded corners. How dare you day Samsung didnt copy Apple. I demand 1 billion dollars paid in full from Samsun to Apple by 2016.

The battery life on the Galaxy S6 is better than what I've been getting with my iPhone 6 (actually I gave it to my brother).

I had to pause it on the keyboard at 6m8s.

It's the opposite for me... and that's with aggressive brightness controls! Not that the iPhone 6 is stellar, but it's good enough that I can make it through the day without stressing too much.

Interesting option if you're in the market for a new AT&T phone. Part of the signup bonus after spending $2000 (can include the phone purchase) is to get a $650 credit for the purchase of a full price phone direct from AT&T.

There is an annual fee that isn't waived so it's more like $550 back - but if you're looking to buy a high end phone, it can pay for the bulk of it.

More news is out now:

Samsung Elec overtook Apple as top smartphone maker in first quarter: Strategy Analytics
Technology | Tue Apr 28, 2015 10:19pm EDT

(Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) overtook Apple Inc (AAPL.O) to recapture the title of world's top smartphone maker by volume in the first quarter of 2015, research firm Strategy Analytics said on Wednesday.

It said Samsung shipped 83.2 million smartphones worldwide and captured 24 percent market share in the quarter, down from 31 percent a year earlier but better than Apple's 18 percent.

"Samsung continued to face challenges in Asia and elsewhere, but its global performance has stabilized sufficiently well this quarter to overtake Apple and recapture first position as the world's largest smartphone vendor by volume," Strategy Analytics Executive Director Neil Mawston said in a statement.

(Writing by Stephen Coates; Editing by Miral Fahmy)

These are Strategy Analytic's numbers. Other analytical firms are saying that Samsung's lead is even bigger:

Samsung widens lead over Apple in smartphone market
In terms of sales volume, Samsung took up 27.8 percent of the global smartphone market in the January-March period, up from 24.7 percent three months earlier, according to the data by market tracker TrendForce.
In contrast, Apple's market share came to 19.9 percent in the first quarter, down from 23.2 percent in the fourth quarter of last year.

The upcoming iPhone 6s better sell a lot or else Apple may never catch up with Samsung in terms of revenue and sales volumes again.

Doesn't Apple's profit already far outstrip that of Samsung's?

Yes I see from the news this morning that Samsung's profits are down YoY and that they're below Apple's profits.

[NEWS FLASH! SAMSUNG SELLS MORE PHONES DURING A QUARTER WHEN THEY RELEASED A FLAGSHIP PRODUCT AND THE BIGGEST COMPETITOR RELEASED NO NEW PHONES]

Since Samsung sells countless models of cheap-o phones too, I'm still amazed that unit sales aren't 3-4 times higher than Apple...which only sells flagship-class phones.

Well to be accurate - Apple does sell midrange phone. But the vast majority of iPhone sales certainly are the newest version.

Apple still sells the 5S and 5C in most markets, and even the 4S in some emerging markets. No one knows the sales mix, but Ming-Chi Kuo estimated those phones making up just under 20% of Q1 sales.

Regardless, when it comes to flagship sales Apple will probably sell 2X the number from Samsung (current S and Note phones vs current iPhones).

Yeah, I still consider the 5s and 5c "flagship class" and they are nothing like the cheapest throw-away phones propping-up the total sales numbers for Samsung. I still think the 5c is a MUCH better experience than the 5s, 6, or 6 Plus...specifically because all those devices have 1GB RAM and the 5c can use significantly more of it (it's not wasting space for 64-bit API resources loaded simultaneously with 32-bit resources). Every time I touch my mother's iPhone 5c, it feels twice as fast to use compared to my 6 Plus and far, far more stable.

You used to see lots of cheap throw-away phones from LG and Nokia too. Are those options still around? Is Nokia making phones at all?

Eh I get what you mean, but it's more a byproduct of how good phones in general have gotten. In the same way I don't consider a Note 3 flagship anymore - I don't consider the 5S a flagship phone. Both are excellent devices that many people will be happy with, but they're what I'd call upper mid-range. They're not just cheaper, but you can get pretty good deals more often than the newest phones.

Whether it's the Note 3, Moto X 2014, OPO, G3, 5S, and so on - you have a ton of excellent choices around 400-500.

No updates on sales? Me thinks Samsung will wait until the end of the quarter (or maybe one month in), which is in July. If they're not touting numbers like Apple does and they're following in Apple's footsteps everywhere else, does this mean the GS6 isn't selling as well as expected? It's certainly the best Galaxy S model they've ever made but something isn't right with all this quietness. I was expecting more noise (not necessarily from Samsung employee Achtung!)

They talked about it in their earnings call.

Samsung Vice President Park Jin-young said, "Galaxy S6 sales have been going as well as expected, while demand for the Galaxy S6 edge have been better than anticipated."

This corroborates the rumors that Samsung recently opened another plant to produce more S6 Edge.

Their initial sales expectations was 70 mill in total for the S6 and S6 Edge for the year. If they continue selling at their current pace, they'll exceed the 70 mill estimated sales figure. Of course, the the S6 sales may fall below expectations in the future, but as it is right now, total S6 and S6 Edge sales figures are above expectations.

And no, this is not some PR stunt or fluff. This was said at an earnings call to investors, and public companies have a legal obligation to tell the complete truth to their investors during earnings calls. Please do not be mad.

I missed the part where they gave numbers, because they didn't, and when they do, it's not in the quarterly reports, so they're not breaking the law when they pad the numbers like they have in the past many many times, Samsung was in denial for some time about their own numbers, that's why they got in trouble in the first place.

The Chinese manufacturers are just as ruthless as Samsung, this will be an interesting year...

I really cannot understand brand loyalty to Samsung, I appreciate their products, but the corporation is pretty flipping evil.
