Right.... but is the lower-capacity "starter" toner cartridge the same as the higher-capacity "replacement" toners? If I get a refill, is it going to overfill the starter cartridge?

I was going to buy this printer last weekend at frys' but i was not impressed with the quality of the test page. It is slightly higher than an inkjet but not what i expect from a laser. in 'tone save' mode, you can see a significant difference in the print darkness. the other lasers there (300-400 range) had quality that was comparable to the printer in my office. I'd rather spend more and be happy with quality than be angry with a low quality printer and kick myself for being cheap. never buy a printer without seeing a test page.

Just so everyone knows, if not already, the printer requires the drum to be replaced every so often. The price for the drum you ask? Only about $80+. So what am I saying...it's not hot when you have to replace a drum that costs just as much as the printer. Just my $.02. I thought everyone should know this if you already didn't. But hey, when the drum does go, you could just get a new printer.

Maybe I have less sensitive eyes than you do, but I found the complete opposite. I found the text to be extremely sharp, and couldn't discern a difference between toner-save vs regular printing modes. Maybe there was a problem with the demo unit?

So then I suppose this would be a ice cold deal if the printer were free after rebate? "Every so often" is a vague term, I know on certain printers there are things that need to be replaced at certain intervals but by the time that hits you will either replace it or just buy a new printer because the damn thing is so old. Anyone using this printer in a SOHO will more than likely get there money's worth out of it before the drum needs replacing. And if you are a home user wanting a Laser printer then this is a very good one to get.

My sister got one from Fry's this weekend. One other drawback of this printer is that the manual feed tray is supposed to only take one sheet at a time. Once in a while this might be an issue.

The Samsung does not have seperate drum unit, it is built into the toner cart. The Minolta 1250w does have a drum that costs $115.

Outpost.com has this printer for 139.99 - 70 rebate for 69.99. The only thing is that the rebate link says for purchases from July 27 to August 31. Hopefully they'll have the correct link up soon.

The rebate forms that I see state that they are only good when purchased at Fry's, Office Depot, Microcenter or J&R.

...forgot to mention that I couldn't get OD to accept a coupon for use with this laser printer but I haven't given up yet ;o)

After my Epson inkjet's heads clogged beyond repair, I realized that I do more document printing than anything else, and Kinkos are plentiful around here so I could take a disc to print stuff in color if needed. So I was on the hunt for a good entry level laser printer and decided on this Samsung. Couldn't be happier with it. It prints flawless text on the crappiest paper I can throw at it. 250 sheets in the cart-style tray so I don't have to keep loading paper in the back like I had to with the Epson. My only complaint so far is that the light on my desk dims sometimes when the printer's on, but that's understandable because there's a 50-jiggawatt las0r going on inside this bad boy

Has anyone refilled the included starter cartridge? I got a kit off Ebay, but I can't figure out to to fill this thing.

As a matter of fact, I just refilled mine today. Very easy to do. Just use a small screwdriver to pry off the round cap at the right end of the cartridge. Work it slowly around the edges. Pops right back in after refilling. I used a 65 gram refill. And by the way, I only got around 200 pages from the original factory fill, but printing as good as new again.

Tonerrefillerkits.com lists this model as holding 90g, so why does the ebay refill kit only come with 65g? Also, how many times can you realistically refill the same cartridge since the OEM seems very expensive for the number of pages it generates? My old printer died, so I am considering various entry-level laser printers before making a purchase.

I did some research and came across some good reviews and a different rebate coupon with numerous stores listed at buy.com. Then I found this thread. So, how did the refills go? Is there any other model worth considering that has a lower overall cost with little to moderate useage?

HP ~ $50
Brother ~$30

I'm thinking about a Brother laser printer, but heard mixed reviews.

Just looked at office depot, which may not have the best prices, but cost per page looks about the same between HP and samsung printers in the same class:

HP 1012: $69 2000 pages
Samsung ML-1710 $79 3000 pages

Brother is a little cheaper: HL-5050 is $59 for 3,300 pages

The Brother's initial cost is muy grande, however. The HP is closer. Does it come with a full-capacity toner cart? That may even it up with the Samsung price-wise.

I have had my Samsung ML1200 Printer now for almost 9 months...I use it at work to print legal size text forms and letterhead. I use it as a backup printer when too many people are using the main office printer or when I want to print documents at work that I dont want tother to see, usually when I am goofing off at work and printing maps etc for my games Anyway, I keep the toner saver feature on all the time and dont notice a difference in print quality on text or graphic web documents. Fast printer with only an occasional jam. I am just sorry I paid $300 plus for a HP1200 for my home and this Samsung is just as good quality. Catridges can be bought off Newegg cheaper than BB or Amazon. I think OD sells them too online but not in the stores. I usually pay $56 per cartridge and with toner saver yields about 3300 pages. This was the first Samsung model though, I will have to get one of these 1700 series too for upstairs on wife's comp..for under $100 you cant beat it.

bought one for my dad when it was on sale at Buy.com for 99 (AR). He loves it.

Samsung is synomymous with Sony (if not superior) when it comes to electronics and computers in my book. Bang for Buck is second to none!

I got in on this on the last deal, and its a great printer, it takes a little long imo to warm up, but after that it prints very quickly (17ppm) it also has a nice toner save feature which makes the text lighter and is supposed to extend the life of the toner by 40%

Picked up one of these printers today. MicroCenter currently has the best deal which is $99 after rebate.
Best Buy's sale is over as of yesterday on this item.

Although I already have a Samsung ML-1430 that I like, I got this printer cause I like the design and size. I can sit it on my comp desk now for easy access. My son can use the ML-1430 for his homework...

When it's not is power saving mode there is an inside fan than has a nasty whine, may try modding it when I get a chance.

OD has this for $99 after rebate. The next question is is there any coupons out there that could sweeten the deal. I don't believe there are, but still good price.
