I have been looking for phones that give me the most freedom possible. The note 2 is appealing to me more then any other phone. Its S pen and the functions that come with it i think have finally opened a door other companies haven't even thought of. What i want to know is what people think and what other phones are out there with the capabilities of the note 2.

It's an Scaled up Galaxy S3 with a pen.

I think it's too big but.....also still prefer devices in this order Desktop > Laptop > Smartphone/Tablet

Have you looked at the Asus padfone 2 that is just being released today, hopefully it comes to the USA. Not sure where you are from though, so that might not matter.

Anyways, what I find would be interesting is if it gets the docking that the first one did, so you could theoretically have an android laptop, tablet, or phone depending on what you want to do, could also keep a keyboard/screen at work, and one at home and just move the phone back and forth.

That said, I am torn between a Note 2 and the padfone2. For my wife, I would most likely get her a note, or note 2, for the digitizer, sense she likes to draw, and could make good use of the stylus.

For myself, maybe the padfone2 since I want a great camera on my phone as that is the only way I take pictures. BUT the note 2 had a pretty darn good 8mp camera anyways.

I am really looking at the Note 2. I like the big size, but do find it comically large. What really makes the Note 2 special though is its large 3100 Mah battery, the S pen and that it supports two apps side-by-side (not all apps support this). NO other phone can do the side-by-side that I know of.

The other ones I am looking at, if 5.5 inch screen is too large, is the Samsung Galazy S3 and the Droid Razr Maxx HD.

Its definitely a nice phone.
But when it doesn't really offer anything significantly better than the Optimus G/SG3, I can't see myself needing one.
I know it has the S pen but how useful is that ??
That phone is way way too big to carry on a daily basis.
I can see why some people would love it though but not for me.

i've played with the phone and personally:

it'll fit fine in my pockets (not a hipster with painted on jeans)
i've seen girls with some big phones since it's easy to carry in handbags
havent played with the pen but a friend had the original note and used it a lot. it looks more useful on the note 2. might be something that locks in note 2 users to samsung. as in moving to another phone might be off-putting if you liked the pen.

if you travel on a train/fly a lot then it would be nice for entertainment.

the only thing that concerns me is making calls with a book near my head but:

a - not that much bigger than other "big" phones.
b - bluetooth earphones. i use these for music so can use for calls too

The padfone i fell is just a way to make your screen bigger. not add neat features. Also im not sure how often i would use the tablet. More then likely it would stay at home and only be used there.

Im looking for something that is more like handheld computer but a phone. Something that will eliminate having to go to a computer as often.

As a Samsung Galaxy S3 owner, the Note 2 is certainly a tempting size upgrade. Although I do think it is silly large, it would likely be helpful for my typical smartphone usage. The two apps side by side looks useless, but the S pen and huge battery certainly seem like nice perks.

It looks very tempting/hot. With a BT headset holding it up to your ear isn't a big concern IMHO

I can't wait to get a Note 2. When it comes to Verizon, I'm dumping my SGS3 for it. (Of course, I'm sure Verizon will do everything they can to crap it up/lock it down, but hopefully xda will undo all of that BS.)

Not only is the Note 2 bigger and badder, the proportions of it (roundish-to-squarish) are back to a more logical balance. The SGS3 should have looked like that instead of the retro monstrosity that it is.

I don't care about holding it up to my ear- mostly I'll just use Bluetooth.

I'm looking at this phone too. But I'm worried that if you put a custom rom on it, a lot of the stylus features will be taken away that are unique to the Note's version of Touchwiz.

Good point, I hadn't really thought much about the stylus features. I'd dig this phone even if it didn't have the stylus. That's just icing on the cake.

Well since it'll ship with Jellybean I personally probably won't worry too much about custom ROMs. (Root access and freezing any VZW bloat I'll want though.)

Yah, for now if you want a tablet/phone hybrid, Note II is only game in town. The LG Intuition seems lame. The HTC Butterfly has potential though.

And like you said, since it already has JB, custom roms are not too much of a worry yet

This shouldn't be a big deal as it doesn't look like it will get good AOSP support because of lack of exynos documentation and etc. I've glanced at the current custom rom development, and I believe the majority of it is based off of the base firmware provided by Samsung with bloatware removed and some additional performance tweaks.

If you have giant man hands, go for it! It's basically a scaled up Galaxy S3, which is a great phone. The S3's screen is already big on it's own, though... This thing is more like a tablet.

I think it's pretty great for work. The digitizer makes pen input accurate and all the reviews say that handwriting recognition is great. The huge size makes it nice as a "always on you" reference. The massive battery means it isn't the burden many phones are. Finally it has the flagship specs that it needs to be useful for a while (quad core 4412, 2 GB ram, quality screen, LTE). This will be my next phone, although I plan on keeping my iPhone as a backup when I don't want to carry a massive device.

Its not a phone, its a Phablet. Even comes with a stylus.

Worst name ever. It wasn't that long ago that screens were smaller and still came with stylus. Not only that but 4 tablets in and I still haven't gotten a stylus with one.
