Wifey and I are in the market for a fridge. Side by side, and white because the kitchen and everything else in it is white.

Looked at the standards - Maytag, Whirlpool, GE, Kenmore, ect. Found this Samsung at Best But. Really liked it for the price.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp...ctCategoryId=cat05004&id=1099395555352

You can get it for under $1000 every now and then and it makes the best use of space vs. any other one in it's price range. Also has the best front controls that we've messed around with on the ice/water dispenser.

We're not interested in Top/Bottom or Bottom/Top units.

Anyone have real world experience with these or know someone that does? I like all of my Samsung electronics (TV's, monitors, DVD players ) Not sure what to think about them as an appliance maker though.

I have a samsung fridge and so do my parents. NIce stainless steel, keeps food cold. Seals nicely, good water and ice, though the filter needs to changed every 6 months or so for about $40.

Its the only fridge Ive ever had so I dont have anything to compare it to, but It does the job excellently.

Good to hear. This would be hooked up to a $2000 reverse osmosis system so the filter probably would have to be changed even less...although the reverse osmosis filters are serious $$$$$ to swap out.

Did you go through Best Buy for yours?

i'm a true believer that you get what you pay for when it comes with major home appliances. quality units $1500 and up. (unless it is open box/floor display)

i bought a fridge in 2005. all my research favored GE and kept me away from Korean-made Samsung, LG, etc.

prior to this, I had the mindset that if a company makes good LCD's, cellphones and computer memory that the level of quality should permeate through their other products.

Eh. I dunno. To me it just seemed like about all you got from the various GE/Whirlpool was the inclusion of "in door" ice makers that saved on space, fancier trays, more sliding shelves, digital temp controls, ect as the price just kept going up and up.

Plus once you look at the Whirlpool/Kenmore/Maytage/Kitchenaid/ect they all just seem like THE SAME EXACT fridge except that each one has one small tweak to it to differentiate itself from the others.

Bump for the day crew...

Anyone have some good links to a consumer reports'esque recommendation by price range?

I went with all Kenmore applicances. I think it's Sear's brand of Whirlpool if I'm not mistaken

Anyway, best way to go if something goes wrong- they get out the lube and bend over to make you happy.

stay away from GE. I've had three major service calls on a fridge that is less than a year old. I even purchased an extended warranty for the first time in my life cause I know this POS will die.

Also knew someone who worked at a store like Best buy in customer relations and she told me (after I bought the fridge) they get the most complaint calls about GE fridges.

Yes, and when you call an appliance repair shop, they laugh at you and say "It's a fridge. What could go wrong?" and hang up on you.

I have a samsung.

Side-by-side model ... about to turn 2 years old. Never had a real problem with it.

Once the ice spout got clogged and I just had to bust out the ice block.

Clean, quiet, good space, etc. I really like it.

I bought mine at best buy, bought the extended service plan just in case ... The filters are like $50, not $40.

I used my best-buy member card thing and got like $100 back in coupons from the points.

Some people just recently bought a fridge, and from what I hear, the salesmen said Kenmore is just rebadged Whirlpool. They can mark it down since it doesn't have the brand brand name. Also, a side to side comparison was done and they were apparently the same. Anyways, I was checking out Samsung's recently, and if you care about the energy usage, most ones I checked used a lot more juice that other brands. May just be the models I saw, but it's a really good idea to check the projected annual KWh rating.

I thought the same thing when I read the OP. I've had good luck with Sears.... buy their "extended warranty"; I've delt with a leaf blower and a washer and dryer. Both times they didn't even care about what the problem was, it was pretty much "yeah, this broke", "ok, here's a new one".

BB on the other hand, well, there's a reason I haven't been there in years.

WHy don't you get this [=whirlpool from costco]http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10043567&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=[/l]

Its energy star compliant so it'll probably save you on power and you might qualify for rebates to offset the price difference. Plus, you don't really have to worry that much about quality (except maybe the hassle) thanks the costco's great policy on satisfaction.

*I love costco.
