I'm most impressed with the size of the S7 Edge. Basically the same size as the G5 with a larger screen. Makes other non Samsung phablets look positively bloated.

The extremely fast focus and low light quality look a class above the 6S. Best camera for at least 6 months?

I'm very tempted to sell my note 5 for the edge just for the camera and battery.

S7 and S7 Edge look real good to me. Battery size has increased in both by a decent margin so expecting a good boost there.

The S7 looks like a really good release. An android phone without a lot of compromises. Good battery, water resistance, SD card, AMOLED, good camera. A bit too large for my taste, but I know that I'm not the norm.

I couldn't care less about the Edge, so this is my takeaway:

- Virtually same design
- Slightly smaller but slightly thicker
- Up from 3 to 4Gb RAM
- Faster CPU (but I think we reached the "comfortable" point with S6 anyway
- More water resistant
- Better camera
- Better battery

I see no reason whatsoever to justify the upgrade cost from S6, but except for that it looks pretty damn solid. I would recommend it in a heartbeat.

For me, I can't wait for the innovations S8 will bring. I doubt anything interesting will happen in the mobile world before that.

That's always the case. Major revisions in design language happen every 2nd or 3rd year. That's just the nature of R&D budgets. The S8 will likely be the final revision in this design series and will probably include USB C, 4k display, a better camera with xenon flash, some more virtual reality augmentation, and the snapdragon 830 or whatever SoC they have available.

As a wild out-of-my-ass prediction, I'll guess that they'll implement some sort of boot-from-usb-C gimmick that lets you boot your PC from the Galaxy S8.

Really comes down to screen size. I'd say the standard S7 is your pick unless you know you want something big.

Disagree considering how much Samsung managed to shrink down a 5.5" screen in the 7 Edge. Compared to a compact 5" phone it's surely larger, but compared to the standard fare 5" phone like the Nexus 5X, it's the exact same width, thinner, and 4mm taller.

With the bigger battery, I'd say the 7 Edge is the better phone except for those who really want a more compact phone.

Gotta give samsung credit for shrinking the s7 and keeping it water tight, lg on the other hand seems to be enlarging the bezel's in all directions. The 5x is an abomination compared to the g2.

+1

Samsung hit the nail on the head with the s7/s7 edge, not so sure about the durability of that glass back but other than that not much to improve on.

As an apple fanboy I am impressed with the S7. I hope Apple can follow suit with there 7 or me and the wife may be going back to android (my last droid device was droid x).

So after reading quickly the hands on the Samsung S7 written by Joshua Ho

http://www.anandtech.com/show/10056/hands-on-with-the-samsung-galaxy-s7-and-s7-edge

All I say is I want my Brian Klug and Ananad La Shimpi back

Not because I need them for reviews or hands on, the writting Joshua Ho did was excellent. No I need them back for I missed them and their unique style on the Ananadtech podcasts and how they do a wonderful job talking about cell phones, cell phone optics, cell phones SOCs, etc.

I was largely disappointed via the Samsung S5 and S6 generation not because they were bad but because they were just incremental improvements and in my mind not worth anything close to the prices that they charge when the $300 to $400 price point was starting to give similar specs to the S4 when the S5 came out, and when the S6 came out you can now get similar performance to the S4 in the $200 mark.

And if you were not willing to with Samsung but with other manufactures such as LG, Nexus, etc you can often find their equivalent high end $200 to $300 dollars cheaper than Samsung similar models. Not last gen performance but literally the same gen performance.

But now we look to have a Samsung Phone that is a serious performer in a way that Samsung has not been in the last few years really since mid 2013 and this makes me miss Brian and Anand and their little talk show so much...

sigh

(now part of the reason why we had not really had a good improvement on hardware is that we been stuck on 28nm for so long and the first batch of post 28nm silicon was kinda a bust / possessed some flaws that prevented a homerun on the Qualcomm version but now that looks to be remedied)

Come on apple would it really kill you to let my Brian and Anand talk about the competitors product and hardware. It would not detract from the apple iOS software in anyway, I just want my engineering / technical fix and most people who buy iPhones honestly do not care.

And lets be honest, the apple hardware is completely amazing.

I'm impressed with the S7, a no nonsense phone that fixed the major complaints about the S6. LG seems to have lost their way. While my personal choice of phone is almost always a Nexus or Note, the S7 looks damn good.

My brother has been "surviving" on his One+ One (his words lol), and can't wait to ditch the phone and go high end Android. Looks like he'll be getting the S7 Edge.

152g? How did it add so much weight?

And how is the Edge almost the same? Tempting to switch.

Nice incremental update over my S6. SD card and bigger battery is nice.
On the other hand, S6 was $400 with free Level headphones, case, two wireless chargers, and two external batteries, and maybe $50 Samsung Pay rebate, which I didn't get yet.

Looks like the S7 has fixed two of the things I hated about my S6. Battery and storage. Waiting on reviews to see if they fixed the other things I hated about it, Bluetooth and the memory management.

I wonder if they'll release a true Global version that's compatible with Verizon?

I'm impressed. I only wish for USB C but I understand why they didn't do it (and it's ultimately not that big a deal).

Truly tempted to go for it now.

These look great but what's weird is that I can almost understand upgrading from an S6 to an S7 better than from an S5 to S7.

Gaining waterproofing, SD and removable battery are all huge plusses to a lot of people. Compared to the S5 (my current phone) though, its just a faster SoC and better camera. Neither of which I may ever notice or care about with my usage being twitch streaming and reddit browsing.

Reviews. Wait for them.

This seems like a fairly safe decision and for anyone with an older Galaxy that's been holding out, this year is likely the best to upgrade. Probably the biggest gripe for a lot of people here was the removal of the SD slot and that's back now.

Nothing else coming out in the Android world is going to have a better SoC or screen and the phone's design looks pretty solid so it's a safe bet as far as I'm concerned.

With the waterproofing and built in wireless charging it just might be enough to convert my wife over to Android after 5 years of being on an Iphone. She's really irritated at the rumors of Apple cutting out the 3.5mm headphone jack on the IP7. She's been clinging to her 5s since release week and is ready for an upgrade. She loved the wireless charging on some of my previous phones (G4 and Droid Turbo).

It probably is a safe buy but there will be full reviews up as soon as (or very soon after) it's released and I very much doubt that they will be supply constrained so why bother pre ordering or buying before a review?

It's possible that this SOC is also too toasty, or that the new camera has a problem. Personally I think that it'll be a great phone but I'd still wait for reviews on an item of this value. I don't think that I'd pay more than a monkey for something and not read at least a few reviews that I trust.
