i remember buying a 2x memorex oem panasonic cdrw in like 1998 for about that. made it all back by pirating CDs for people in high school. one of the first IDE drives. before that it was scsi which only the rich kids had.

Paid like $650 for aHP SureStore CD-Writer 6020i (external) plus $125 for the Adaptec SCSI card mid 1997. Can't recall how much 650 mb CD-R blanks cost, probably $4 each - Plasmon brand. Coolest and one of the most expensive hardware I've spent on computer hardware that time. Now 15 years later, you can buy a 12X Blu-ray SATA burners for about $70, 25GB blanks about $0.80. :\
