Better to release them when they are ready. Could just be logistics.

This was my first DIY computer at the age of 66 and it went beautifully - only issues were installing a few drivers and it actually took 3 attempts with one (audio driver) but the mobo itself was flawless. I'm not sure i understand the installing dimm boards in 1-2 or 3-4, i installed mine in what ASUS refers to as DIMM A2 & B2 - see the 2nd pix below
At 66? wow! that so cool, sir. my dad is retiring next year. he still struggles to use his tablet
I was referring to A1-B1, A2-B2 combination of RAM dimms only. 1st-3rd slot, 2nd-4th slot..
i don't know about the sm951 but can say the xp941 (first gen) installed - albeit, it took 18+ hours of researching on the web and trying different "tricks" - the oddest one was that during the windows install, even though windows would see or recognize the xp941 drive, the "next" icon was greyed - one time i finally clikked on it out of desperation and it installed
yea, these ssds are notorious for windows' installation woes. many threads online. that i why i am being very cautious here. the 170 chipset will sure to have proper support for these ssds along with x4 slots that should eliminate the need of adapters.
and yes i am waiting to order the 950 PRO - i'm hoping, with the fact that samsung is shipping it with drivers and/or boot files, it will go easier, installation wise - what doesn't help is I'm running windows 7 x64, which isn't the "friendliest" to running PCIe SSDs as boot drives

I'll probably wait for a few weeks to see what others report in terms of experiences - not really interested in being a "beta" tester, and especially since the NDA termination date has been extended some, indicates the possibility of early production issues
delay so close to launch indicates logitsics problem. the design and testing part must be over long ago. but we can't say for sure.
The Z97M-Plus, like all the Z97 mobos, dis-ables two sata ports when a M.2 SSD is installed in the M.2 socket. Even installed in the M.2 socket, as it's only two lanes or "x2" (which samsung marketing does a great job of camoflaging in their literature) it only gave me transfer speeds of 770 MB/s read and 580 MB/s write so I installed the xp941 in an expansion card (addionics) and transfer speeds jumped to 1180 MB/s read, 870 write, which is what samsung specifies.

I will be using the M.2 socket for the xp941 and installing the 950 Pro in the expansion card - main reason is i do a lot of video rendering, and just the xp941 reduced rendering times 55-60% (avg takes 65-75 minutes, dropped to 30-35 minutes) and that's reading from a sata SSD and writing to the xp941. I'm real interested in what happens to those times when i reading from one M.2 PCI SSD and writing to a second (the 950 Pro).

I'm actually entertaining changing the video card as it covers the 2nd expansion slot - with a non-fan cooled card, i could install that xp941 in the 2nd slot and enjoy full speed on both SSDs. I don't watch a lot of video on the computer, and don't game any, so running that first slot at x8 wouldn't be a big deal to me.
i think you should sell ur 941 and go for bigger/larger 950. i don't understand why do you have that fan on the ssd? your grphics card's fan is right behind it to take away the hot air.
I have been following this guide so far. z97-m plus and gigabyte z97 mx gaming 5 are 2 MBs at the top of my list. now that m plus available here is made in brazil i am not too keen on it. i have had non-satisfactory experience with products made here.

here's a shot of the xp941 installed in the addionics card

one tip on installing the z97M-plus if you do go with it - READ THE ENTIRE MANUAL TWICE BEFORE THE INSTALL

there was an installation instruction on approx pg 31 that didn't make sense until i got to page 90 - and obviously, i didn't read the manual first so i ended up scratching the already bald spot on the back of my head even balder
lol, it is considered un-cool to read the manual but my experience is that these manuals and bundled driver discs are really helpful from time to time.
thank you for your inputs. lets hope sm950 come with better software support.

.......i don't understand why do you have that fan on the ssd? your grphics card's fan is right behind it to take away the hot air. .

all of these PCI SSDs run hot - all these PCI SSDs were really intended for tablets, notebooks etc, not exactly work horses or heavy work station machines.

the SM951 has thermal limit sensors that throttle the SSD down to some astronomically low transfer speed when temps hit 82C. Here's one reviewer discussing http://www.legitreviews.com/samsung-sm951-512gb-m-2-pcie-ssd-review_161689/3 - interesting though, another reviewer tested that SSD and found the throttling didn't degrade transfer speeds much, range of 3-5%. That review was right here on anandtech http://anandtech.com/show/9396/samsung-sm951-nvme-256gb-pcie-ssd-review/2

however, the xp941, as a first gen unit, didn't have thermal sensors or temp limits - one reviewer measured 114C on the controller. I measured mine with a non contact thermometer (laser) and while rendering video files saw temps at 96-97C. The part that gets hot, the controller, is under the letters ICC (circle) 20 at the M.2 socket end - and is on the side of the SSD facing the camera - additionally, those fans on the GPU are drawing air away from the expansion card, not blowing toward it. With that fan blowing down directly onto the controller, my max temps have been 77-78C, idle temps 44 - 46C and medium duty temps 61-66C.

JohnnyLucky has reported the 950 Pro has a similiar thermal control, they've changed the name or title but acts similiar to the sm951 - but still, a little extra active cooling isn't going to hurt, especially in terms of longevity.

Ramcity has them on their web but oddly, described as PCI 2.0
" Samsung 950 PRO 512GB NVMe M.2 PCIe 2.0 x4 80mm SSD "

and pricing is a little exotic - nearly $543 USD for the 512 GB variant

https://www.ramcity.com.au/upgrade/data-storage/internal-solid-state-drives/all/80246?cn=241&f9=NVMe%20M.2%20PCIe%202.0%20x4%2080mm%20SSD&rf=cnf9

They sure are adding early adopter tax there, AUD$747.99 if i convert that to my local currency it NZD802.46.

At one time i was thinking of purchasing the SM951 from RAM City but luckily the 950 was announced before they got stock. My local PC Store where i have an account and a discount i can pickup the 512MB 950 Pro for NZD632.50 down from the normal price of NZD699 so super happy about that.

As far as RAM City, looks like they are pricing it high to try and sell off the SM951's that just arrived that no one will want when compared to the Retail 950 with better Warranty, more resilient VNAND and faster performance. I cannot see a reason you would now buy the OEM SM951 over the 950 Pro unless it comes down to price.

I was thinking that but also that they might be trying to set the "tone" price wise for other vendors, to encourage them to keep their initial offering price high. Their price on the 512 GB variant, at $543 USD, which is almost $200 over samsung's stated retail price.

5 local vendors in NZ now have it listed, the pricing without discounts range from $686.76 to $699.95 NZD which is about 476.45 US Dollars, so a bit of a premium over recommended but not overly so.

They started doing this with all new updates after what happened with the 850 Pro FW update back in Feb. From what i understand a hella lotta ppl had their drive crash at once. This way, if something bad happens, they can pull it and not that many ppl are affected.

It always last for a week.

i have maximus vi gene and was wondering is i can use this ssd with one of those lycom adapter. so far i was only able to make plextor m6e work as a boot drive. samsungs xp941 and sm951 were no-go.
You can use it on older motherboards that dont have Ultra M.2 ports by using an adapter, just remember you wont be able to use it as a boot drive as the bios will not support it. It is unlikely that vendors will update older bios's as they would rather you brought a new board.
It is possible to do the required BIOS modification by the user himself. I was able to get the Intel 750 NVMe SSD bootable with my ASUS P8Z68-V system. For details you may look >here<.

someone over on tom's posted a link to amazon's listing for the 950 the other day - it simply stated currently unavailable and it was a listing by Amazon itself - so it was basically collecting pre-orders.

Today that listing has been taken down - only reason i can surmise they'd take down a listing that was basically set up to collect pre-orders is that they were told their shipment date had been pushed back indefinitely

The NDA being pushed back twice and the amazon listing disappearing sure does give me a bad sense, and that maybe i'd be smart to wait before buying

I got tired of being a "beta" customer a long time ago

I think your right, B&H had them yesterday for pre order too and it is gone today. There must be a problem for them to keep pushing them back.
