SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 750GB

Picked up 2 Samsungs. Packaging was fine, though I've never had any complaints about it in the past, nor have I had any DOA's from them. Already owned one of the WD 640's. All drives are used for storage, so speed isn't of any vital importance, but mass transferring files around, I don't notice any difference between the WD or Samsungs. Both are very quiet as well.

Anectdotal accounts of hard drive failures are pretty worthless. It doesn't matter what drive you look at, someone has had a failure and will post about how they swear off never buying a drive from said manufacturer again. There have been a few legitimately bad models in the past, (many old Maxtors, IBM 75GXP come to mind) but in recent years pretty much all drives are highly reliable and you shouldn't really fear for the reliability of any brand.

just opened up my package of mobo, memory, psu, cpu and hdd. everything's floating in peanuts in their own packaging but the hdd is still wrapped by a single layer of bubble wrap.

I guess I should have been more clear. The issue with packaging is if you *only* order the HD, they do a horrible job of packaging it.

If you order something else with the HD, then they do a better job.

I ordered "only" the wd6400aaks and it was packaged very well and cost $99 shipped. THAT is a good deal, as is $109 on this one. for $130 I'll pass.

I recently ordered a WD7500AAKS and it was HORRIBLE packing. A few peanuts in the box and some sort of cardboard-ish type wrap. The drive was not secure and looked like it had probably been bouncing around in the box the whole time. However, the drive worked fine and haven't had any problems. I could have just gotten lucky.

What warehouse are you getting shipments from? I've ordered at least a dozen drives from Newegg over the years and never received a drive packaged as you described. My orders always ship either from Memphis or NJ.

My drives come wrapped in 2 layers of bubble wrap which is wrapped in enough clear packing tape that you could probably play whiffle ball with it. Then it's dropped in a box and filled with enough peanuts that it's not loose in the box at all. Odd that the packing methods are so different in the different warehouses.
