Samsung SSD 840 failing?

I have been having problems with my SSD 840 loosing recent files lately. I attributed the first one to an unexpected power failure and the most recent one I have no explanation for. One day my invoice file for 2015 is there and the next it is gone WTF? It is a 500G drive. It is a little over a year old. I used a smaller drive for the boot drive and never had problems with it so I figured I would get a bigger one BIG MISTAKE. I guess I screwed up in trusting an SSD drive. Any advice on what to do would be appreciated. I think I will have to go back to a slow conventional disk drive to keep from loosing data. My server did not back the drive up either because it had errors so the newest backup is about a month old. I have not been doing any maintenance on the drive. Is there anything I should be doing? I am using win 7.

Doesn't matter what you are using (HD/SSD/Flash/external), they can, and will all fail, so, keeping backups is really important.

There isn't anything you can do for SSDs, I mean, there is no real maintenance needed, besides making sure the firmware is up to date on problematic SSDs.

If you don't trust that SSD anymore, you secure erase it, and use it for games or whatever else that wouldn't contain important data (unless you back it up).
You could also RMA the SSD as well.

So the total number of files lost is 2? Files don't just go missing, they leave traces: either in the file system or in the form of errors in the SMART parameter list.

  1. At any point did you attempt to run a disk check to see if any errors/anomalies are reported? (nothing fancy, just the Windows disk checking tool)
  2. A software that displays SMART parameters might help here (CrystalDiskInfo for example)
  3. Did you make any changes to the way Windows caches write operations to disk? (Device Manager > Disk Drives > Samsung 840 > Policies)
If you are to find no evidence of malfunction I may have to tell you a story of how I once worked until 3 in the morning for a work project and woke up the next day with no trace whatsoever of the entire project folder on my mechanical drive.

Well the two files were high value files but there could be others that I don't use on a regular basis that are gone. I have run a disk check and it is finding problems but what do you do about it. I though the drive leveling software was supposed to fix that.

Well the second instance was not a power issue and both were recently stored files that are used everyday. I want to know what I need to be doing to keep from loosing more files. I have never lost an important file from a mechanical hard disk unless the whole thing died even with power failures. I have battery backups that are supposed to shut the machine off and terminate properly before shutting down. The drive is under warrante so should I send it back or run some sort of program to fix the drive or what? The file that just went away was probably the most important file I have on the computer. Why does it pick the files that I use and leaves the rest alone? I could see the latest file edits not being saved but the whole file is gone like it never existed. I can search for the file and it sees where the file should be but it won't open because it is not there.

Secure Erase it, and see if the issue pops up again.
If so, RMA it.

I run a 840 pro in my laptop and it doesn't lose any files. What does magician, 4.9 is the latest, say about the drive health?
