May and June are usually cool and gloomy. It is unusually hot for this time of year.

Things are calm here at the moment. If I go to work tomorrow I'm riding the motorcycle and I'm lane splitting the fuck out of this bitch on the way home.

Winds die overnight and pick up as soon as the sun rises and then the fires blow up all over again. And we have at least another 24-48 hours of these hot dry Santa Ana winds.

Next week it is back to 60s-70s and marine layer.

I've got a buddy just evacuated out of the Carlsbad area. One of the primary things I learned from the Colorado fires was take your important shit with you to work. We had a number of neighbors who went to work in the morning, not part of the evac order, but then they found themselves in the evac order later that day. They were not allowed back into their homes. Some lost everything. Pets included.

Not sure how it works in California, but when they close neighborhoods here, you're not getting back in.

My wife works out of the house and my son's school is closed tomorrow so they will both be here.

roads are closed, but there are people walking to their house to get stuff

live near the CSU San Marcos campus

fire has moved away from where I live although I live in one of the communities that has been issued an evacution order

there's news video of a house on fire that I can see out the window and I'm guessing it's at least 2 miles away

CSU San Marcos campus in the middle left

in the top left where there are two houses near a winding road, the house above is on fire

I live farther to the right of what is shown in the image

Wow. I heard about this earlier. I just spent a week at the Park Hyatt Aviara, which has been evacuated. My inlaws have a place just west of Aviara Pkwy. I hope they get this under control.

Jules - whereabouts are you? From the pic, I'd have to guess a bit north of the fires. Carlsbad Village area?

Reminds me of Waldo Canyon and BFF the last two years. This is from the Waldo Canyon evac area after the fire raced into Colorado Springs. Bright spots on the horizon are homes -- they went up like candles.

Photo was approx. 1 mile from the fire front.

Hope you're all right. 101 today and tomorrow in my part of the OC. Santa Anas aren't helping.

We all saw this happening. Maybe they should use the 38 million gallons of water that the dude urinated in to help fight the fires. :hmm:

To all affected, I hope you, your friends and family are safe.

someone remind me again why living in california is so great?

California has a lot of natural disasters but they are mostly avoidable if you're smart and even if you're stupid, they are rarely deadly. In the last two days of big fires, I believe there have only been 30 homes destroyed so far with no loss of life out of the 40,000 homes (20k yesterday, 20k today) that were under an evacuation order. Any destruction is horrible, but these typically are homes in the hills surrounded by brush. You can avoid the fire risk by not buying one of those homes.

The same goes with the occasional mudslides. Those usually happen in the wealthy areas with homes built along the shear cliffs. Earthquakes are a bit more random and potentially deadly but California has excellent building codes that they take very seriously. The Northridge earthquake 20 years ago cost us $20 billion but it only killed 57 people. Minor earthquakes happen but they rarely do much damage and we're still waiting for the "big one."

Flying in last night - this is from approach to SAN, maybe 40 miles south of the fires:

On the ride home, northbound on Rancho Sante Fe:

We're about midway between Poinsettia and Cocos. Naively hoping that this early fire will burn away enough of the potential fuel for the rest of the season. Just bought this house a little over a year ago; I always thought if anything happened it would be an earthquake.

In-laws neighborhood lost 1-2 homes, they live immediately off Poinsettia.

Every few years it seems. It's not usually a problem except when the Santa Ana winds pick up and it is hot and dry.

This is usually a problem during the months of July and August... not May.

I heard somewhere that it might have a lot to do with laws preventing "deforestation" and removal of a lot of brush and such. Every few years, after it has become overgrown, it dries out enough to cause a big problem. A friend from Cali told me this, so I suppose I am more inclined to believe him.

The worst part is, as we were driving from SAN to Carlsbad about 2 weeks ago, my wife (who is from the area) said, "I'm really afraid of a fire here. There's a lot of brush and it's hot out." I looked and kind of scoffed, because the brush is mostly low growth, and she explained that it's really dry and a little bit of wind can basically cause any fire to migrate using the ground-level brush as kindling until something bigger happens to catch. And all that time I've visited out there, earthquakes have been my fear.

If you were in those flames i'd turn the hose off. I'm not gonna wish death on you but i'm not gonna try saving you either.

I'm surprised there hasn't been an outbreak in LA county. we've been scorching all week.

I wouldn't be there to begin with. I'd get the f*ck out as fast as possible.

I don't wish death on this guy, but it's pretty insane to expect to put out a raging fire with a garden hose.
