I heard somewhere that it might have a lot to do with laws preventing "deforestation" and removal of a lot of brush and such. Every few years, after it has become overgrown, it dries out enough to cause a big problem. A friend from Cali told me this, so I suppose I am more inclined to believe him.

uhm...no. It's a California law that you need to maintant a 100 feet radius of defensible space around your property, which means you need to clear dried brush and such.

There is no "forest" near these SoCal fire and like Six says you're expected to maintain a defensible space around your property. It's all brush with a few scattered oak trees. The fires in NorCal are a different type of beast. They try to prevent monster fires with prescribed burns but probably don't do this enough right now. The prescribed burns are better for the land since it clears the dead trees/brush and allows the sequoia trees to drop their seeds which only happens during a fire. Logging would only take the healthy trees and leave the most flammable stuff left.

I wouldn't be there to begin with. I'd get the f*ck out as fast as possible.

I don't wish death on this guy, but it's pretty insane to expect to put out a raging fire with a garden hose.

Well, your house isn't on fire until an ember lands on it. What he's doing is basically how the fireman stop a house from catching on fire, but of course they are trained, have the proper equipment, and aren't idiots.

I've been to their brewery. There are a lot of businesses over there including the Ducati dealer I bought my bike from.

We're ready to go if we get the call.

Hope they get these fires under control soon.

Best of luck. Unfortunately, so much is dependent on the weather.

what goes around comes around ... remember nice posts from SoCali ppl this last winter about how weather is so nice there and they don't understand why would anybody live up in north..

So mowed my lawn yesterday, after few nice rains over past few weeks, it never looked so green and strong. Temperatures are between 50s and 70s, with nice mix of clouds and sun, some days with some rain.

I'd say actually that most of our posts were worried about the lack of rain and quite happy when we did get a few showers.

If you get the call (which hopefully you won't), logistically how will it happen?

Have you already moved your important documents/computer media/pictures off site?

The Santa Ana winds and the accompanying raging wildfires have been a part of the ecosystem of the Los Angeles Basin for over 5,000 years, dating back to the earliest habitation of the region by the Tongva and Tataviam peoples.[12]

The Santa Ana winds have been recognized and reported in English-language records as a weather phenomenon in Southern California since at least the mid-1800s.[1] Various episodes of hot, dry winds have been described over this history as dust storms, hurricane-force winds, and violent north-easters, damaging houses and destroying fruit orchards. Newspaper archives have many photographs of regional damage dating back to the beginnings of news reporting in Los Angeles. When the Los Angeles Basin was primarily an agricultural region, the winds were feared particularly by farmers for their potential to destroy crops.[1]

The winds are also associated with some of the area's largest and deadliest wildfires, including the state's largest fire on record, the Cedar Fire, as well as the Laguna Fire, Old Fire, Esperanza Fire, Santiago Canyon Fire of 1889 and the Witch Fire.

In October 2007, the winds fueled major wild fires and house burnings in Escondido, Malibu, Rainbow, San Marcos, Carlsbad, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Ramona, and in the major cities of San Bernardino, San Diego and Los Angeles. The Santa Ana winds were also a factor in the November 2008 California wildfires.

In December 2011, the winds led to "state of emergency" declarations in several municipalities after 80+ mph gusts toppled hundreds of trees, power lines, and traffic signals throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Approximately 230,000 people were left without power for an extended period after the incident.[13]

In May 2014, the winds initiated the San Diego County fires, months after the Colby Fire in northern Los Angeles County.

Thank goodness I don't live in an area with natural disasters.

Hurricanes aren't natural disasters? Damn near where ever you live you will be faced with some form of natural disaster. California has fires and earthquakes. If it ain't that it's riots, crime, gang shootings and all that shit.

Looks like things are starting to calm down today.
I live East of where Jules does and the entire valley was filled with smoke and ash.
It smelled like a bonfire outside this morning.

I just came back from vacationing in San Diego last week. Already too hot for May. It felt like mid July.
