You are in northern part of San Diego.

Actually Carlsbad is nice I would find a place in Carlsbad. But, if you want to find something cheaper you can try Vista or Oceanside. I think Encinitas is about the same, i dont remember. And I believe Rancho Santa Fe can get pricey as well.

you'll be fine. most major shows are on friday nights and go up to l.a. for saturday night because of the major city status. of course a lot of the major tours come through here, in fact because of location its quite possible they start here and work their way across the u.s.

i love it here and wouldn't leave for anything. ive lived here my whole life, which to say isn't that much at 24 years.

You still like it? I'm not sure if this applies to other places, but it seems like everyone that grows up in the LA area or the Bay area ends up despising it by the time they're adults.

Rancho Santa Fe is one of the most expensive real estate markets in the entire country.

There are many places along the coast to rent depending on budget. Inland might be an option if some of the coastal areas are out of your price range.

I live in North County San Diego. Feel free to PM me if you need an opinion on any particular areas you are considering. I've lived here for over 10 years now and know the area well.

sure. nice weather and the beach, mountains or desert can all be reached in a short distance. vegas is a 40 minute flight and going south across the border is a hop skip and a jump away. l.a. is less than an hour drive and theres always plenty of things to do around here. maybe if i did live in those other areas though id feel the same after awhile. but for some reason ive just always felt fortunate and happy living here my whole life.

If you live in North County, then it would only be about 90 miles. If you drive 90 mph...then you could get there in an hour. You'd have to do this mid day or at night though. Traffic.....blah.

Yeah, seriously. In actual practice, there's no way you're driving 90 mph between LA and SD except at very specific times.

I've done it before but only late at night when no one else was on the freeway. Not going to happen during the day...more traffic and more CHP.

I'd be more afraid of speeding at night than during the day, since you can't tell if other cars are cops.

Yeah...Irvine to SD (well UCSD) is about 1 - 1.25 hours depending on the pace . I've done it at like 1AM in the morning with no traffic maintain atleast 85mph on the low end (shhh don' tell ) and it is still about 1 hour.
So I don't see how going SD to LA is just 1 hour since Irvine to LA is still a distance that you can't cover in 15 minutes or less even if you factor in 90mph.

JMax: I bet you they just don't bitch about the highway commute, but town driving ANY time.

Btw - don't bother with Temecula. I live there (well college...so i'm 99% of my time in irvine thank god) and traffice is ATROCIOUS....
I'm not talking about JUST the highways, but the bloody city traffic. ALL DAY the roads are full and congested. It takes well over 30 minutes just to get across the other side of the city (Which isn't all that big to begin with!) and we are talking about getting "across" the middle to the "other side" of the middle...not even going to the outskirts. Its a lethal combo of too many cars on the road with stupid traffic lights (and too much political power concentrated in Meadow View where they rape everyone so they don't have to deal with 'tough lifestyle changes'). And come time for school to let out - the roads are woefully retarded as the left turn light on winchester/margarita will let like 5 cars pass (because everyone's reaction is so slow...) with a line of like 50 that clears back so far that the cars just block the intersection behind it (yup, that is how bad and inconsiderate temecula drivers are).

Save yourself the pain and DON'T consider Temecula/Murrieta because it just SuxXx too much.

When I go/come home every few months, I do it in the 9-1AM time frame just to avoid traffic...but that is mainly the 91

I've never had trouble with the CHP at night...and I've driven a good average of 105 on the 91/15 at 1-3AM plenty of times...I would think less cops are "up" then...

or maybe i'm just lucky

then again when I go that fast...I'm usually alone save for some person in the far right lane going 55 - I hypothesize they are generally old people from Hemet

Damn. Last year a CHP pulled me over around 11:30 PM for doing 85 and there were only a few cars on the freeway. Then he tells me where he first noticed me speeding, and it turned it out that he'd been following me for two miles.

Edit: Since then, I never go above 75 at night. At least during the day I know what's behind me.

Nah, If im going 90, a cop would have to be going over that to catch me. Meaning I could spot him miles back and slow down. I think they are more understanding at night too. CHP bike cop passed me when I was going 78/79 and just kept on going. This was on the 415 too.

(I-15 & I-5) Shortly thereafter, the East/West freeways all become jammed.

Housing is really inexpensive up in Temecula. That is about an hours drive from downtown SD with NO traffic. It will depend on where you're working for sure.

I live in Murrieta. It's a good place and a bad place depending on what you're looking for.

Pros:
-One of the only non-ghetto places you can still buy some housing for under 500k. Most of the housing is brand new or fairly new, too, so you'll get way more for your money than elsewhere.

-The traffic isn't as bad as say downtown SD or basically anywhere in LA. Sure we get rush hour too but there are plenty of side streets. It'll be a shock if you're moving from like West Virginia, but compared to the major cities...not bad.

-Good schools, very little crime. Makes for a great 'raising kids and having a family' environment if that's what you're after.

-You're right in between LA, OC, and SD, so you have the option of going everywhere. It's 45 minutes to OC with no traffic. 1 hour to downtown SD with no traffic. And 90 minutes to hollywood. Although you're not really "close" to any of the major cities, you aren't all that far from any of them either.

Cons:

-No social life out here. Girls are almost nonexistent and the ones that are here are all fat or underage. People dress like crap. High influx of trashy people. Gotta head to SD or LA for any clubs/nightlife worth going to. Demographics show that less than 10% of the population is within the 20-30 age range.

-Commuting to SD (or worse, LA) on a daily basis sucks. If you can get a great job in this area, jump on it. If you're going to commute, just rent a place nearby to your work.

-Very little diversity up here. Hope you aren't an asian-food-snob like me who only eats "authentic" chinese food because there isn't any up here.

-Temecula is HOT. Like way hotter than the coastal cities. It's not death valley hot but we regular hit high 90s and low 100s in the summer. Beach cities rarely get past the low 90s.

-----------------

Oh and btw all gas in socal is expensive. I was in LA last weekend and saw it up to 3.80 for premium. No matter where you are in socal it's going to be like that.

San Diego is both a city and a county. As a city, it's the southern tip of california and probably has the worst traffic but the most nightlife.

Downtown (gaslamp district) is like mini-new york. With mini-New York real estate prices too. But it's a great place for nightlife. IMO the hottest girls in SD are in the downtown area. But it's also the most hollywood-esque. i.e. the girls are much more 'plastic' and superficial here.

If you like the DT scene there's a neighboring city called Hillcrest. Although most people know it as 'gay town', if you're comfortable with all of your neighbors being gay, it's an amazing place to live. It's not as expensive as DT, your gay neighbors always have hot female friends, and there's a ton of stuff to do (not to mention great shopping).

Going north you'll find PB at mid-county. PB is pretty much college town. There aren't actually any schools here that i know of but every drunken sorority girl from SDSU seems to live here. Great for drunken frat boys and slutty beach blondes but not much else. Btw, i'm pretty sure SDSU has one of the highest STD rates in the country, too, so beware.

Just north of PB is La Jolla, which is the ritzy area housing UCSD and the largest gold digger population i've ever seen. But because of the college there it also has a HUGE asian population. But we're talking mostly the FOBby, geeky asian population.

North county (Oceanside, carlsbad, encinitas) is more laid back and less sophisticated than DT but has much less nightlife. Seems to be an older crowd up there. It also has a higher influx of latins (and more importantly, latinas) and a ton of Marines from the 45,000 member Camp Pendleton Marine Base just north of Oceanside. Actually, we have like 3 bases in SD county alone so you'll find us all over SD. We get into fights a lot. Especially when drunk. Keep that in mind.

North-east county (Escondido, Vista) is similar to North county but hotter. Some areas are kinda ghetto too but nothing like LA.

Oh, and btw, san diego is widely regarded as "Man Diego" because the nightlife seems to always be a 4:1 ratio of guy:girl. It's worse in PB.

Go into any club or bar in SD and do the numbers yourself over the course of a few weeks. It's worse in the winter. There are bars in PB with 2 girls and 90 guys *cough*openbar*cough*
