One of the most appealing features of this deal is that the player is guaranteed to be Rockbox-compatible (at least based on the description).

There are two versions of the E200 series: v1 (which is Rockbox-compatible) and v2 (which is not). If you buy a new one, you are pretty much guaranteed to get a v2. If you buy a refurbished one from other places, it is a cr*pshot.

If I understand correctly, you should be able to use an up to 8GB microSDHC card with Rockbox for a total of 14GB capacity. Of course, 4GB cards are priced more reasonably (in the $20 range). So, you are getting a 10GB player with great features for $65.

If you are concerned about it cr*pping out (I have seen many complaints in buy.com reviews), make sure you use a credit card that provides extra warranty protection.

Nice price on a nice player. OP, you may want to change the title - says c270 when it should be e270. The c-series are different (I have both).

Off topic. I have a friend with an 8gb e280 that he broke the dock connector on so its now worthless. Would it be possible to buy this one (or a cheaper smaller one) and swap the memory out of it. I already took it apart to see about replacing the dock connector and it appears that the memory is not soldered to the board its just a little addon board.

Funny, but I actually tried to purchase an 8GB memory module from an E280 on eBay last week. I thought I could score a cheap E250 (2GB) and do the same thing. At least physically, it appears to be possible. I do not know if you would run into any other incompatibilities (liek v1 hardware and firmware vs. v2).

BTW, I won the eBay auction but the bastard refunded my money and cancelled the sale. I guess he expected to get more for it than he did. I hope it wasn't you.

Nope wasn't me. I'm tempted to hack on a mini usb jack on it mainly because finding and soldering a 30 pin replacement would be a major pain and he will never use any special docks for the additional audio\video outs any way. But I figure if I can just pull\swap the modules it be a cheap fix.

Check the AnythingButIpod forums and the Sansa forums to be sure, but I think I ran across a thread where they said a v1 to v1 memory swap was no problem, but v2 memory was soldered down.

Supposedly the refurbs have consistently been v1, so I'd think you'd be able to do this.

In the latest Maximum PC magazine (Aug. 2008), they have an "Autopsy" series article covering SanDisk Sansa e200 players. It gives you a decent look at the innards. Specifically, here is what they say about the memory:
MEMORY: These two memory chips each hold 4GB of flash memory. The controller for both rests on the underside of the raised circuit board, and the board itself attaches to the e200 using a 40-pin connection.

Thanks for the tip on Rockbox OP! I had never heard about this, and I scored a V1 c240 from Woot a while back. This is gonna be fun!

No problems with my order with Froobi.com. They were fast in shipping and it arrived as illustrated. Works perfectly.

Yes, this works. I bought a dead e280 on eBay before. Opened it up, took the memory out and put it into my e250. There are some helpful tips on anythingbutipod.com, but since you've already opened it up, you're good to go.

I like the sansa 2X0 line of mp3 players a lot. I recently purchased a 4 gig refurb for 54 bucks and received an 8 gig.

The only complaint i have of the mp3 player is a lot of people seem to suffer from the blank white screen. When you turn it on the entire screen will be white but if you have the menus saved in your head you can still use it. You have to turn them off and on to get it to work normally. I'm not sure if that is v1/2 though.

Ordered one of these on 7/03/08 and it died today. Just outside of the 60 day warranty Froobi gives. How convenient. Anybody else had bad luck with theirs?

This is why I think long and hard before ordering refurbed. I've been burnt enough times to know it's a serious crap shoot.

I know if I buy refurb again, I'll get the extended warranty if they offer one and won't buy if they don't.:frown:

As you can see above, I bought mine at the same time as you. I have no problem with mine at all. If you are going to buy extended warranty, why don't just buy a new one?
I'm very disappointed that the price is still same as before! If it could be cheaper, I may buy some more as gift.
