sandpaper for lapping heatsink

does anyone know where i can find 800+ grit sandpaper for lapping my heatsink? i went to home depot and the highest they had was 600 and i lapped it the best i could with that.

Any auto parts store should go up to 2000 grit.

I went to Orchard Supply Hardware today & picked up various grades upto 2000.

I got 600-800-1500-2000 all at Ace hardware, although Im not sure if Ace is nation wide.

Orchard Supply has a great selection of sandpaper, adhesives and best of all, plumbing goodies. Automotive finishes require 2000 grit if you want to do it right.

The Big K-mart where I work has up to 2000 grit. The rougher stuff is in the paints section; the ultra fine paper is in automotive.

KMART? i asked my brother if he would think they had it there and he said no so i didn't bother going. I'll go tommorow,,, it's in walking distance (not really but it's really close to my friends house,,, i'll get a few bottles of vodka on the way ^^)

Because fine grit paper is what you use before buffing and polishing. The smoother you get the paint, the less work the buffing is.

btw, under what section would home depot have the higher grit sand paper? i went to the paint section and the guy said that's all they had.

The flatnett is more important than smoothness. It should be smooth, but too smooth has negative effect on cooling performance. According to a test from one of the overclocking forum, the cooling performance goes down once you go past 1000grid(or was it 600). Mirror finish was pretty bad too.

I finished mine off with soft-scrub polishing compound.

i beg to differ. I have used 600 grit and put it on with AS2 to get temps around 47 idle (with a 27cfm fan). I just lapped it again and went up to 1500 sandpaper and polish and now it's 45 idle (with generic compound).
