Soup/Sandwich is a great combo, but it can get costly or too salty depending on the soup.

If you like roasted peppers, they can brighten up a sandwich substaintially as well.

An awesome sandwich can defeat the purpose of "toss it together quick lunch" as they can take a good amount of time to "make" (preparing veggies), or just cost more (buying various cheeses, spiced meats, new condiments), but it usually is still worth the extra effort and cost compared to eating out.

Try using some Pita bread for your sandwich. Cut in half, then toast, open them up and stuff with meat, cheese, veggies.
Also try lavosh (flat bread). Moisten with water or milk, spread with cream cheese, layer on meat, cheese, lettuce, etc. Roll up into a cylinder, enjoy.

For a perfect sandwich:

-Drop the white bread, get some bread with character. Multigrain, honeywheat, rye...spice it up!
-Put condiments on both slices or bread. Don't leave a dry side, or you'll cut the taste in half.
-Mustard, mayo....zzzzzzzzz. There are hundreds of condiments. How about horseradish, guacamole, malt vinegar, seasoned olive oil...the list is endless.
-Lettuce makes a sandwich stand out. Add a slice of tomato with poultry based lunch meats for an extra flavor boost.
-Fold lunchmeat slices in half and place them on the bread. This fills the sandwich out more, makes it more appealing, and the air in-between the meat brings out the flavor.
-Besides lettuce and tomato, how about a slice of avocado, purple onion, green pepper, cucumber...even prepackaged mixed salad works well.
-A sandwich NEEDS a pickled item on it or with it to be complete. A dill pickle on the side, pickle slices on the sandwich, olives, and pepperoncini are good choices.
-Buy deli meats. Sure, they're $7/lb in some cases, but compare that to getting a single sub at Subway. You'll get 3-4 good size sandwiches for under $12 with ingredients, or $5+ for a single sub at the popular chains. Deli meats tend to be unprocessed, so they're better for you and taste much better.
-CHEESE!!! Any good sandwich needs cheese! American is fine, but deli white American, cheddar, colby, *PROVOLONE* (yum), Swiss, muenster, and pepper jack are all good sandwiches. Blue cheese or gorgonzola crumbles on roast beef is said to be orgasmic, but careful if you're eating it as work (one little crumble on the floor will stink up the whole room).

That oughta get you going. Enjoy.

Mmmm blue cheese...
I think I may be inspired.

I always find that a sandwich tastes better if the bread is lightly toasted. I don't know how you would do that at work, but I can go home at lunch time.

Fire up a frypan and do the following:

Sprinkle a little extra virgin olive oil on your bread and fry it up. While it's frying, put on a slice of provolone cheese on one piece and your meat on the other to heat them up.

Once golden brown, put a little mayo on the piece of bread with the meat and a fat slice of tomato and some Romaine lettuce on the other side. Assemble and eat. Dip in some ketchup if you're into that kind of thing, too.

If you eat it soon enough, the meat and cheese will be hot but the veggies are cold. Great combo.

Throw all of the ingredients for the middle in a blender. Add some flour to thicken. Paste on bread. Yum.

That may sound gross but that's how you make finger sandwiches. ham+relish+mayo, blend for ham salad. Roast beef + horseradish sauce = beef salad. Turkey + mayo + romano cheese = turkey salad. I used to make this stuff all the time. I would put it on bread that I used cookie cutters to make funky designs.

Try putting some things on your sandwiches you normally wouldn't. Ranch dressing is a great substitute for mayo. Honey + ham = yum. Ever try Nutella and turkey? Me neither, but I bet it's not that bad.

I love putting the following on mine:

-horseradish
-inglehoffer mustards (many different flavors, soooooo good)
yum

I also use wraps instead of bread. Healthy, low carb, lots of fiber.
-I recommend ones from tortillafactory (lots of flavors, etc)

Italian bread, pumpernickel, potato bread: yum

Possible new ingredients: roasted red peppers, horseradish, sweet pickles, marsala sauce, boiled egg, roasted pork

I like chicken salad made with about 50/50 spicy mustard & mayo. A touch of sour cream if you like it sweeter. A good, good bit of Goya salsita pepper sauce, maybe some horseradish, & plenty of cayenne pepper. The weaker salsitas have an almost lemony essence to them, not hot at all. A little lettuce, thin, thin tomato, & sliced up piece of my favorite cheese, & I'm good.

Remember to pull some of the breading out if you're putting in wet stuff. Tuna sits better without all that stuffing.

the difference between your sandwiches and subways/quiznos is the toppings. you have none, they have plenty! buy lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, peppers, etc. and top away!

After perusing the thread ... I'm thinking we've got quite a few sandwich fetish fellows on the board

Myself, I like to throw on some banana peppers and mild chili sauce for some flavor.

Get good choose, provolone or pepper jack, and either spicy deli mustard or honey mustard. Chicken breast works too. I prefer a sourdough bread over wheat. Tomato + lettuce or green pepper. Delicious!

agreed, I usually buy those whole load fresh baked breads... slice into a top and bottom, fill and then cut into 3 sandwhiches.

-Put condiments on both slices or bread. Don't leave a dry side, or you'll cut the taste in half.
also season your bread, or consider toasting it.

-Mustard, mayo....zzzzzzzzz. There are hundreds of condiments. How about horseradish, guacamole, malt vinegar, seasoned olive oil...the list is endless.
a good seasons pack in red wine vinegar, spicy brown mustard, or some type of hot sauce

-Lettuce makes a sandwich stand out. Add a slice of tomato with poultry based lunch meats for an extra flavor boost.
try different varieties of lettuce and tomato...iceberg, romain, endive... roma, early boys, pink ladies... each lettuce and tomato has a distinct different flavor.

-Fold lunchmeat slices in half and place them on the bread. This fills the sandwich out more, makes it more appealing, and the air in-between the meat brings out the flavor.

-Besides lettuce and tomato, how about a slice of avocado, purple onion, green pepper, cucumber...even prepackaged mixed salad works well.
and dont forget the pickles, pepperchinis, banana pepper rings, and black olives

-A sandwich NEEDS a pickled item on it or with it to be complete. A dill pickle on the side, pickle slices on the sandwich, olives, and pepperoncini are good choices.
oh, yeah I just said that.

-Buy deli meats. Sure, they're $7/lb in some cases, but compare that to getting a single sub at Subway. You'll get 3-4 good size sandwiches for under $12 with ingredients, or $5+ for a single sub at the popular chains. Deli meats tend to be unprocessed, so they're better for you and taste much better.
mix and match meats... bologna + ham, cooked salami + turkey, hard salami + pepperoni, pastrami + roast beef, and dont forget the other meats... solid albacore tuna, meatloaf, BBQ pulled pork, etc.

-CHEESE!!! Any good sandwich needs cheese! American is fine, but deli white American, cheddar, colby, *PROVOLONE* (yum), Swiss, muenster, and pepper jack are all good sandwiches. Blue cheese or gorgonzola crumbles on roast beef is said to be orgasmic, but careful if you're eating it as work (one little crumble on the floor will stink up the whole room).
always use 2 cheeses, 1 creamy, and 1 sharp... it adds flavor distinction. Mix Longhorn, cheddar, swiss, or monterey with provolone, mozerella, munster, white american, yellow american, or brick.

That oughta get you going. Enjoy.
