I think so. Socket 1156 never hit the bottom of the stack so 775 was still needed. With socket 1155, not only will there be a full line of CPUs, but there is the H61 chipset for the low end. This pretty much can replace all those Celeron with G31/G41 boards.

what kind of idiot would buy one of these to save, maybe forty bucks?

The kind that can't or don't want to afford another $40.

I admit that I do have a difficult time seeing the value of the single core Celeron at a $5 savings, but a Sandy Bridge dual core Celeron should be quite the nice processor at $45-ish.

Wow, never knew it existed. Looks like it was never a PIB and only a tray CPU, probably to keep OEMs happy because they didn't need to support another platform. The value isn't that great, however, since the Sandy Bridge version will be significantly cheaper.

'Celeron G530 and this is a 2.4GHz clocked dual core with two threads with a whole 2 MB of cache. It will sell for $42'

the SB Celeron's fast L3 cache and IMC should match the Core 2 duo's E8600's larger L3.
the SB Celeron's wider IPC should compare to the Core 2 duo's higher frequency.
the SB Celeron's SIMD is probably neutered down to Core 2 generation.

now as the athlon x4 645 is a very good proxy for top of the line desktop LLano CPU.

Ugh, … it's too bad SB is locked down for "FSB" overclocking.

That $42 G530 -- 2 cores, 2.4Ghz, 2 MB L3 processor overclocked to 4.5GHz might just have been a low budget scrape the bottom of the barrel screamer.

We need a G530K for $5 more. Someone put in a request to Intel.

Which is exactly the reason why Intel is locking down overclocking. No more spending as little money as possible to get mid to top range performance, which is all clearly a result of AMD not offering enough competitive pressure.

And of course its not just protecting the upper end, its everything in between. Suddenly there's a lot more incentive to go ahead and spend the extra $10-20 for the extra 200-400MHz even though Intel is selling what is a physically identical chip that is really no more special.

I don't see the point. the i3 is $100. That's cheap for a CPU, especially considering the features/performance it brings. Why muck it up with more confusing line ups, and parts that duplicate each other in different segments?

you don't see the point of offering a CPU for less than half the cost of the i3?

do you also fail to consider bulk purchases made by system builders? You might see the individual difference as trivial but in orders in the thousands a difference of just $10 can make a significant difference

the point is that for $40-$50 a SB celeron will approximately match a LLano in non 3D software. thats the value a LLano is to the average user.

for graphics intense software (gaming) the difference in price between a LLano and a SB Celeron could buy a discrete graphics card that performs better than LLano's IGP in real life.

LLano is all about mobile applications.... for desktops, it will be at SB Celeron level.

Yeah but you wont be able to overclock that stupid celeron with its worthless doomed-to-be-disabled gpu. Anyone willing to bet that the $70 version of llano wont be able to reach 3.8GHz and put out much better numbers than an i3-2100 in games?

I don't consider that cheap. I consider it semi-expensive. Generally the most that I want to pay for a CPU. Given that you can purchase a top-end (oxymoron, perhaps) AMD quad-core for the same money, and Intel is only offering a dual-core with HyperThreading, it makes you wonder where the value is in CPUs these days.

Cheap is a $50 E5200, overclocked to 3.7Ghz.

I think there's plenty cheap cpu at sub 100 range, sandy celeron probably will not change too much of that, amd has a ton of x2 x3 x4s in that price range and all can be OCed. I think a non-ocable celeron might be good news for OEMs that build cheap machines. but even that like I said amd got plenty of this market covered, over covered I'd say.

The vast majority of these cheap CPUs are not OCd; they end-up in low-end desktops from Dell or HP. Cheap business or comsumer boxes. Most of those machines do not even allow for overclocking at all anyway.
