I had a question about the up and coming release of the Intel 3960X CPU.
Now the Intel 3960X is on the LGA 2011 Socket motherboard right? And that's 2011 pins for the socket right?

I thought the LGA 2011 was a replacement for the older 1366 Line right? Just a little confused was reading the Ivy Bridge die shrink of Sandy Bridge for the 1155 will be released Q1 next year. I have been reading that the 3960X will be out November this year.

What is the name for LGA 2011 Socket of CPU'S?

LGA2011 will support SB-E and IB-E when it comes out. Anything that has an Extreme suffix will not be used for LGA1155 which is targeted towards mainstream users. LGA1155 will support SB and IB only.

Sorry I know, So is the 3960X going to be released on the 1155 socket or the 2011 socket?

Just confused about the line, I thought the 3960X is the replacement for the 980X 1366 cpu line right? The 3960X is the enthusiast line 6/6 cpu on the 2011 pin count right?

The 3960X will be for the LGA2011 only. The upcoming IB will have the similar SKU as SB but the difference will be that the 2 will be replaced with a 3 instead. For example, Core i5 3500K and Core i7 3600K.

The 980X and 3960X are catered for the enthusiasts so they do belong to the same category of $1000 processors. The entire lineup for SB or IB should be $400 or less price range.

Thank you that makes since. Can't wait to see what the 3960X can do!!!

So when is this coming out? I needs me an upgrade!

Is the LGA2011 platform gonna be treated like 1366? Is LGA 1155 going to get longer support? Intel platforms are so confuddling.

LGA 2011 is an enthusiast platform. Six-core CPUs, quad-channel RAM, extra cache, and extra PCI-E lanes are on this platform. It will initially support SB-E and, down the line, IB-E.

SB, IB, SB-E, and IB-E are all architecturally Sandy Bridge. The IB models are 22nm and the SB models are 32nm.

LGA 2011 will see minimal performance gains over LGA 1155, with the exception of six-core CPU availability.

Tomshardware says that x79 will have a shorter lifespan than x58.

Yeah, I think i'll give a 2500k a shot. I really hate Intel playing musical chairs with platforms.

ummm where are u getting this?

LGA2011 will start at around 300 for bottom model... and the price will spread out to 1499 on the top level Xeons.

I was mentioning the price of SB and IB, not SB-E or IB-E. The low end model for LGA2011 will start about the same price as the upper end model for SB but to actually spend a lot more on a expensive motherboard and more RAM than SB platform would, I don't see why should anyone spend that little for a low end LGA2011 which might have less overclockability than a Core i7 2600K, maybe.

i7 3930k is where the real action will be at, 6-core unlocked and half the price of the stupid $1,000 3960X for a mere 100mhz less speed and 2mbs of cache per core like current Sandy bridge instead of 2.5 (big whoop).

Any chance that IB will eventually have a 1155 6-core processor option?

nope. not in intel's interest.

Going by initial releases for IB, the one after that is still unknown if it will have 6 cores for the mainstream. But that is a ETA of 2013 / 2014 or comething.

I do not see any maybe about it, the cheapest SB-E is already known to be locked (ie, a non-k cpu). You get turbo and that is about it for headroom / adjustable settings.
