I was under the impression that they Sandy Bridge based laptops would launch at the same time as the desktop chips. I saw the Anand review and I keep hearing about different manufacturers talking about prices and specs but no release dates anywhere (as far as I can find). Also I couldn't find a thread on the subject anywhere seems like nobody's talking about it am I missing something?... are the laptop releases far off?

Probably start as a trickle and then pick up speed throughout the year. Give it a month and see what happens. It takes the manufacturers time to retool and get production up.

How many people in the PC world actually own firewire devices. And why do they keep wasting precious real estate for that interface?

That seems like a really good deal. Anyone have any insight on what options they would go with on this? Maybe the SSD? Or could you buy a higher performance SSD aftermarket and just throw it in there? How about the backlit fingerprint reading keyboard? Necessary?

So what's the deal with these? I need a laptop for grad school, no gaming, but will be using CAD and a lot of simulation programs that are CPU intensive. Will it be worth waiting for these chips? I'm looking for something ~13-14" and <$1000. Since I'll be needing it for 4 years I want something that's going to last.

A lot of people. I have a ton of firewire stuff. It blows USB2 out of the water, and is especially nice for video equipment.

USB3 will of course replace FW eventually, but its too new for anything to be really using it.

And as for the main topic, I need a new work machine. We are an all Dell shop, so I have to wait for the new Precision M4600 to be released. I am hoping its sooner rather than later though.

The better audio devices use firewire. I use my laptop mostly when recording at home since I can take what I did with me and not be confined to one room.

To answer my own question on Dell's Sandy Bridge stuff, they are holding a press conference on Feb 8th to announce "New Business class Products". Which with any luck will include the precision laptops.
