I just posted this in peripherals, but thought it may be a motherboard issue so came here for some Help
Hi all,
I need some help. I just installed a turtle beach santa cruz sound card on my computer. The sound is terrible, all music and game sounds are scratchy and distorted as if the input is overmodulated. Motherboard is an Abit Kr7A-raid with athlon 1700+ processor.
The sound card is in pci slot 5. The OS is windows 98se with all updates and current drivers for the sound card. Does anyone Have any suggestions.

The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz doesn't properly support Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition; those two OSes use the still-buggy and no-longer-updated (or supported) VxD drivers with the Santa Cruz. (The latest VxD driver version, build 4081, is dated way back in January of 2001 - that's 16 months ago!) Worse, that driver has incompatibility problems with DirectX 8 or 8.1! Here are my suggestions (in order of decreasing preference):

-Upgrade your Windows OS to a later version, such as Windows 2000, Windows Me or Windows XP. That way, you can install the far superior WDM drivers instead of the crappy VxD drivers.

-Go back to whatever sound card you had been using prior to buying the Santa Cruz. (But you may not put up with the mediocre-at-best sound.)

-Downgrade to an older graphics card whose drivers don't require DirectX 8 or higher. (But you won't be able to play the newest games at all.)

That's all I can tell you.

Win98SE WDM drivers are available on TB's website. I'd try those.
