my sapphire hd 6850 idle temperature is a bit high

I was holding the plastic fan cover few times and during the installation, would that be the problem that i have lap the heatsink?

Your memory isn't down clocking it self, i had the same problem a few weeks back. I was getting like mid 50c and i noticed the memory clock wasn't dropping below 1000mhz even when idling. Go to AMD overdrive and hit default, that solved it for me.

my overdrive section is disabled, any idea why?

accidently turned on overdrive, memory clock still hitting 1000mhz when idles

edit: also I turned off my second LCD and the idle temp isn`t changed much , still around 50 C-55C

when I play worldofwarcraft, it hits around 58C though.

I also played the mannul fan control and adjusted to 100% speed, woot , it was loud, but 90% sounds about right

also this worried me too, is it normal? almost full load of GPU and GPU Core clock is sitting at 300MHZ

case is open, i don`t think this would related to my question though.
my gpu suppose to idle at 100 and memory at 300

If a room has high ambient temps though, case ventilation is pretty much moot. My 6970s will idle around 60C during a hot day in the house with the case open.

h3blade, what have you done to move GPU clock from 250 to 300?

Your first image shows idling with 2 monitors (all correct). Second image shows change from idle to load with GPU clock stuck at 300. Have you used overdrive or a tweak to change settings?

Gpu should be at 100 Mhz and memory at 150 Mhz at idle.

Under load it is 775 gpu and 1,000 memory.

Seems like something isn't right with your settings?

thanks everyone,
I have done a tons of research and many of them reported that has something to do with CCC profile.

here is the a list of software that I have used:
easy tune6 comes with my gigabyte ud3r-b3 motherboard
AMD Software Suit
GPU-Z
AIDA64

I have done NOTHING to tweak any setting such as overclock or adjust frequency of any kind , core/memory/etc.

I have uninstalled easytune6 and the GPU core clock is able to move between 250-775 now depends on GPU Load, however the memory cloak remain the same, constantly at 1000Mhz, according to member happy medium that has to do with dual monitors setup, which I have also heard on GTX570 as well, the memory cloak would not decrease itself during idle.

ImDonly1 is correct, I should have GPU at 100 and memory cloak at 150 at idle.

To summary, my new problem is that this hd 6850 is idle at Core 250 and memory 1000.

I will try to unplug my second monitor and report back

Check if your web browser has 3d acceleration or not and (disable it). Firefox was causing my 2nd crossfire card to spin up and this was raising the power draw and temps in my case.

^ Good catch. Also media player acceleration can trigger an intermediate power state.

Idle is 250/1000 with 2 monitors connected. To disconnect you have to physically unplug usually, disabling in Windows and turning the monitor off doesn't count and it will stay in the two monitor state. You have to remove the plug from the card.

My Sapphire 6850 always idles high as well, on one monitor and normal 3D clocks. So yours with two doesn't look unreasonable since its idle clocks become higher when both are connected. I think the fan runs at lower RPM compared to some other cards, hence the reason they are so quiet.

46-50C without any web browser or media acceleration on my card, although IE8 makes the card rev up to max clocks when you scroll a webpage with smooth scrolling enabled, causing higher idle temps by about 5-10C. Don't have that issue with Firefox 3.6.16.

As mentioned above, if you are using Firefox 4, Chrome or IE9 with GPU acceleration, that too revs up the clocks to max and increases temps by about 5-10C. Very annoying, so I don't use browser GPU acceleration at the moment until that's sorted. Shouldn't need max clocks for web browsing - Windows Aero doesn't.

The thing to check is your load temp - should not rise much above 80C in Furmark, 70C in intensive gaming if the heatsink is making normal contact. In fact a smaller delta between idle and load temps is actually a good thing - less heat stress from constant cooling and heating cycles as long as idle isn't massively high (under 60c).

The higher idle clocks and GPU load look like driver and software issues. You have to try and track down what is revving the GPU - it looks like a Youtube flash video.

Hmm, my Sapphire HD6850 idle clock speeds are 300 on core and 300 on the memory, which is very high imho, got a 460 in another pc and that has 50mhz on the core and 150 (150 or 100 not 100% sure) on memory.

Anyone know how i can reduce it? tried after burner but lowest is 400mhz core on that. AMD overdrive 600mhz lowest. 42c is the temp at idle.

Edit: Trixx allows it to go down to 200 and 300,

Mines idles around 48 C, but that's because I have a card right next to it with barelt 5mm of clearance from the fan.

Right when it first boots up, it's at about 44 C. If I have some Youtube stuff going, it's 56-ish.

after removing second monitor cable attached to the video card, the GPU-Z has reported that GPU is idle at 100 and Memory cloak 300.
So dual monitor is the reason that causing memory cloak maxed at 1000Mhz.
I think this also explains why I have burned my ATI9800PRO/6800GT/6600GT, I have been using dual monitor in the past 3 years, 24h/7d a week.
I belived all my previous video cards were working at the maxed memory clock and which has shorten the life span of the video card.

has anyone got the similar problem? Maybe I should find a way to edit my video card profile and make it idle at 300mhz without gpu loads. Otherwise, my hd6850 maybe burned again just like my previous cards.
please correct me if my assumption is wrong

^ The card should be capable of handling extended periods at the higher power state (e.g. dual monitor) if it is designed properly and has sufficient cooling (onboard & case air-flow). After all, these are not the full 3D clocks/power state (e.g. gaming).

There are systems that have to run multi-monitor 24/7, and the card warranty should cover this. In your individual situation, just ensure you have good air-flow!

This is not a problem (bug), this is how the cards are designed.

With 2 monitors attached, your idle memory clocks are the same as 3D memory clocks. Idle core clock is a bit higher than 1-screen idle too.

I read the idle clocks run all the way to 1-screen values, if you have two identical screens (resolution and refresh). Didn't try myself.
