I want to be excited, but with [Redacted] like Newegg jacking up the price of the reference cards by $130 I probably won't be able to get one for months. I had just gotten paid the week everyone bought them all out.

This highlights the absolute need for minimums in graphs. (In general, not just for this card). Looking at the average would suggest a lot smoother gameplay than you might potentially actually have. The graphs would be nice to see if it's a single dip or a seesaw.

just wait for the lite coin craze to die down. as soon as the bandwagon jumpers start crunching the numbers on their initial outlay and the rising difficulty, they will stop the mad buying/overpaying.

Considering how cheap electricity is in some regions of the US it may be a while before they feel the crunch from the difficulty bumps. Of course living in Northern Cali I'm almost at the point of why bother.

Its not the cost of electricity, its the cost of the cards vs how long it takes to pay them off. As the difficulty increases, it takes longer and longer to get any ROI on them.

The minimums represented in the graph are not representative of actually gameplay. The Metro LL benchmark tool is littered with dips and drops. When playing the actual game, you would never see a drops that low, I haven't at least.

Here is one of Balla's runs for example - I think he deserves a nice golf clap for beating a stock GTX 780ti running the same settings.

Really good to see these cards starting to show up in reviewers' hands. Although, I imagine these really won't be available in retail for a decent price until mid January at the earliest.

I almost pulled the trigger on an R9 290 going for $442 on eBay yesterday, but I looked more closely at some reviews of the reference design and decided against it. The 27C delta between this card's cooler and the reference deign really highlight how bad the stock cooler is.

The heatsink/fans are similar to the 7990 reference cooler just with some asthetic tweaks. Now we know who made the reference 7990 cooler.

Don't want to crap on anyone's parade but my vanilla MSI 290's are rocking along at 1120/1400 and don't get above 80c gaming. Fancy new cooler is fine but I'm going to whack some PK3 paste on them and shoot for 1150-1200 (they currently artefact at 1135+). They never throttle and aren't annoyingly loud at idle or under load.

AMD shot themselves in the foot with their stock cooler on these cards.

What is the load fan speed at those clocks?

I think the real problem has been delivering AIB alternatives quickly enough, having said that the mining gold rush has obviated any hesitancy about adoption so it's now a moot point.

Max gaming tonight at those clocks was 52. Not silent but neither noisy. If benchmarking continuously or mining I'm sure it could become annoying but I didn't buy them for benchmarks and if mining I'll be out or tucked up in bed.

Mining did save the day for them, otherwise sales would have been poor overall i guess. So far the ASUS card is my target.

Interesting find.

It had to dissipate a lot of heat so I guess it's fitting for the 290.

I guess I missed it but did anyone see the actual length of this card? It looks long.

Im curious why the Asus card over this?

My choices boil down to
Warranty
TIM / Cooler changing
Good specs and a custom card

Those three pretty much leave me with MSI (& EVGA on the NV side).

ASUS warranty RMA is as bad as rumored and I will try avoid them.

Same with me on the Asus as in I will try to avoid them, but I won't rule them out
