Sapphire Radeon 9500 128mb "L" Shaped Memory $138 shipped!!!

Wasup guys,
I've been looking to find one of those rare ATI Radeon 9500 non-pro with the "L" shaped memory to hack to a 9700 pro and finally found one at a good price. Check it out $138 free shipping. This price definately beats newegg.

I also forgot to mention I called the store to make sure they verified the card in the picture was the exact same one they were going to ship with the "L" memory.

This may be the wrong place to ask this, but how do turn this into a 9700 pro?

You can softmod it with hacked drivers to a 9700 pro. The success rate has been near 50%, but to save a couple of hundred dollars it seems well worth the risk. The drivers are linked below along with an explanation of how it is possible.

I'm saving a couple of hundred because the latest hack can push it all the way to a 9800 as well. Also, as far as I know you can not damage your card in any way. If the mod is unsuccessful reinstall the stock drivers and everything should be fine.

It cannot possibly hurt you card physically, but it may cause it work abnormally, but if you reinstall the correct drivers, it should work fine. And as for the 9800 hack, it's not negligible since the CAT 3.4 because ATI put the enhancements into the driver directly that people experienced with the CAT 3.2. You may be getting 50 point more or less in 3dmark01, depending on how your system is configured when you run the program. Heck, I get 50 points or less everytime I run the program without changing a thing. I have never gotten the EXACT same score twice in a row. And I have a 9500 softmodded to 9700 pro with speeds at 380/315.

Well, I took the plunge... been waiting for a good deal on a OCable radeon.

It's a little late for me, but has it been confirmed that the memory is in the "L" config and that the PCB is red? Maybe the site is using the wrong pic.

guju: likely they don't know what they're talking about, ati had resellers pull all 9500's w/ that pcb config when they found out about the softmod and threatened legal action to the full extent on anyone who continued selling hackable cards.

tlam: 9000 is not hackable to 9800 fill rate. the couple extra bucks for the 9500 np is worth it if it's a hackable one.. think of it as not quite but damn close to a 9800 pro for only a buck forty.

I heard about that as well, but many stores including Newegg and Allstarshop still continue to sell this version of the card. If anything, I can just return the card if it is not the correct one, but they assured me twice over the phone that is was the exact same as the pic and I also noted it in the comments of my order. Guess I'll just have to hope for the best.

Well, it's shipping via first class mail from CA. Probably Saturday at the earliest, maybe as late as next Wednesday. No way to know for sure.

Yes, same card but it has the newer gold heatsink. I think the older black, heavier heatsink is better, but we'll see...

Hrm, seems like they may have a history of descriptions not matching what they send. I understand you can take it (if L shaped memory) to a 9700 np, but I have heard nothing about taking it to the 0.13 micron 9800.

B) how can u push it to 9800 when the 9800 uses a different chip?

A. Its about a 50/50 chance and even if it doesnt work you STILL have a good card

B. It reaches that performance level, no one meant it magically becomes a 9800
