I just picked up a 9500 sapphire L shaped memory @ newegg for $145 shipped + a free paper weight. Good Deal?
This is the right one to soft mod Right?

look here...newegg had a bunch of those refurbed, stating "we cannot guarentee what color PCB you will recieve."

just to say I got one of those red pcb from newegg with a gold heatsink, but the softmod was a no go, got some ugly artifacting But some of the other people seemed to successfully softmod their's. So just don't get your hopes up on softmodding, it certainly isn't guaranteed.

Judging by the price, I think the poster was referring to the non-refurb model that was $30 more.

I got one from Newegg with the gold heat sink and the softmod worked just fine. 3DMark benchmarks took a nice BIG jump and it OC'd nicely to 350 on the processor. The memory wouldn't go past 300 though without getting a few artifacts. Overall a very nice deal! BF1942 plays smooth now

i understand he was talking about the new ones, but I figure they may have put the disclaimer because a bunch of those refurbs were RMA'ed because of wrong PCB color.

Does the 9200 support the VGA to Component adapter? (for HTDV)

edit: Whoops - dumb question. I don't know why I got 9200 stuck in my brain....

How much you wanna bet that all of those refurbs ar cards that people tried to softmod, failed, and got sent back.

I'm saving a couple of hundred because the latest hack can push it all the way to a 9800 as well. Also, as far as I know you can not damage your card in any way. If the mod is unsuccessful reinstall the stock drivers and everything should be fine.

A) the hack will prolly not work
B) how can u push it to 9800 when the 9800 uses a different chip?

A. Its about a 50/50 chance and even if it doesnt work you STILL have a good card

B. It reaches that performance level, no one meant it magically becomes a 9800

LOL, this MAY have been 50/50 3 months ago. it's prolly 20% today AT BEST

9800 and 9800 Pro are .15 Micron (R350), only 9600 and 9600 Pro are .13 Micron Chip (RV350).

Umm, softmod is not a guarantee. Success rates are 50/50. Also, it doesn't turn into a 9700 Pro. It turns into a 9700 NP. Overclocking gets it to 9700 Pro. You could just buy a 9700 regular for around $210 new (mwave) or used for even less. It's $60 more, but guaranteed to work and warrantied (unless you want to overclock to Pro speeds - not worth it IMO).

I've been waiting arround to pull the trigger on this card for quite some time and this thread caught my eye, but the 6.5 resller rating cooled me off. Fortuantely I found a better deal at a better reseller! Allstarshop has the Sapphire Radeon 9500 "L" Shaped with RED PCB for $135 with ground shipping. Their Reseller Rating is almost as good as new egg with a 9.47. Not bad as far as I can tell.
Cheers

Good deal, but it's like rolling the dice; maybe worth it if you are willing to live with 9500 non pro if moding fails.

I got my card from newegg yesterday! I thought I would let you guys know how it worked out for me.

started out with my old 8500 at 285/285
3d2001se 9674
3d 2003... 1301

9500 128mb
3d2001se 10937
3d 2003... 2903

I installed the hacked driver and it worked perfectly
3d2001se 13527
3d 2003... 4401

Then I overclocked it to 320/320. It would not go much past this with out giving me a screen full of bar codes.
3d2001se 13996
3d2003... 4995

I am very happy to get a 9500 that almost makes it to 9700 pro speeds.

Another little update
I hooked up my water block the GPU and got some better results.
The core now clocks to 369mhz!!
The mem is the 3.0 stuff and I cant get it above 320 with out serious artifacts.

My last 3d 2003 score was 5378

Not bad for a $145.00 card.

EDIT: Pushed it to the max 400/320
3d 2003 = 5614

ya, i have to tweak it yet. i haven't oc'd it, all i've done so far is up the memory to 128 bit path.

not sure there is much diff between 9800 and 9700 pro.

i'm still running at the base clock speed so it is probably more like a 9700 non pro.
