ooooo thats a big plus., though i really want DIVX encoding. since i do alot of that, unless thats what you mean

i was hoping NV could do something with PV to help encode Divx/xvid and the like

id imagine though, that even though sapphire show that on their specs list...i bet things like H.264 acceleration will come in later drivers/versions of avivo?

divx accel on ATI has been around since R300

Yeah i was referring to encoding with avivo (hopefully)

It is not a 48 pipe card in a traditional sense, it will not be 4x the performance of the X1800 series.

Well, there have been reports of 25% faster than a 7800GTX512. And 3DMark 05 scores in the 11000 range. That does not sound 4x faster than a X1800XT.
Nice post by the way. And don't forget your Prozac today.

Ummm... welcome to the video forum. The 16pipe, 48 pixel shader r580 has been speculated and discussed for months, where have some of you been?

Would you say, as a consumer, that this sapphire spec sheet is misleading to the general PC consumer? Even if Sapphire listed it correctly saying "48 shader pipelines" instead of "48 pipelines", I think ATI is counting on the general uninformed enthusiast (yes, they exist as is apparent from posts in this very thread, as monkey has shown) to not know the difference. Benchmarks will speak for themselves of course, but in general, it would seem to be a marketing tactic.

Yes, the specs are misleading, just like the 12 pipe x1600 specs. But I've come to expect this kind of misinformation from marketing, and of course there are benchmarks, so anyone who really want to make an informed buying decision can do so if they look at the results.

Honestly, I think the X1900XT will be a very cool toy. New technology and all and will find it's strong points in certain games that actually utilize as many shaders as the R580 seems able to handle. If it proves faster than G71 across the board with consistency, I may consider picking one of these up. Cmon benchies!!

it's legal. . . and much more honest than nVidia/AEG's Viral Marketing to our forum.

3 pc are down :
sold : AMD X2 4200 . 7800gtx , x1800xl , MSI SLI mobo , Intel P4 3.0Ghz , Gigabyte 775 mobo , 1GB OCZ 3700 , 2GB OCZ 3200.

new machine will be :
X1900XT, AMD opteron 165 , Asus A8R- A8R-MVP , 2GB 2.2.2.5 Gold Ram and left over will go towards a nice monitor like dell 3007fpw or 2407fpw

Holy hardware Batman- you must know the UPS/Fed Ex guy by name! Looks like a sweet rig your putting together. If the price of these X1900XT's falls below $500 I'm going to have the girlfriend hide the credit card until the G71 appears.

Me too, my X800XL can't satisfy my needs any longer. SW Empire at War demo chugs along at 8fps with everything cranked @ 1680x1050, at least if it's raining.

I the question should read : How the fvck can i not know?

Come on now, have we EVER in the history of graphics cards seen a 400% increase from one gen to the next. We know from the specs it will be nowhere near that kind of increase. Not to mention its an improvement of a current design and not a radical new architecture, which would be required for that kind of an increase... if its possible at all without a considerable die shrink.

If you read around, it's been said that:

A 48 Pipe Unified Architecture card would perform more like a 24 Pipe X1800. I'd say that's probably an accurate assessment.

The performance boost isn't going to be THAT stellar, folks. Be real. If anything else, saying 48 pipes is a marketing gimmick, because it's not a 48 pipe card made by say...nVIDIA, which holds more true to the way it's understood that pipes are utilized (and quoted as).

Looking at the current benchmarks I can see the x1800xt is roughly 2-2.5x as fast as the x1600xt.
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/games-2005.html

The x1900 is basically 4 x1600 gpu's combined into 1. Obviously, there are alot of other factors that will be improved over the x1600, like the mem bus, mem speed, and mem size, but judging by the numbers the x1900 would be about 4x as fast as the x1600 in the best case scenario. Which means it will be about 2x as fast as the x1800, but most likely only is some synthetic benchmarks. In actual modern games, I'm expecting a 1.5-2x peformance increase over the x1800.

QFT... this topic has been beaten to the ground, raised, beaten again, etc. Refer to Robert's post about how this card has "48" pipes.
