I'd like to see McCain pick someone who wasn't running in the primary.

I'd kind of like to see him pick someone with little experience; I'd get a kick out of watching the Dems try to criticize that without underscoring Obama's lack of experience.

I'm now hoping he picks Palin. Let's watch Biden beat up on a woman in the debates and see where the Hillary/female vote goes.

I think Fern is onto something and its why I was not too happy with the Biden pick.

When Biden gets his blood up he can be an arrogant sounding prig, but with proper coaching and preparation, Biden can demolish his opponent softly by showing how foolish the statement of the opponent is.

How Biden packages the response will be the key test and time will tell.

anyone hear the story about Rove calling up Lieberman to tell him that he'd make a horrible VP? haha... and Robert Novak crawled out of his death bed to write an Op-Ed about what a crappy idea McCain/Lieberman is.

Really? That would be a Democrats' dream... I can think of a dozen ads that would be great. More importantly it would completely destroy McCain's only real argument, which is that he has experience. (it can't be that important to him if he picked a running mate without it) The Democrats wouldn't have to say a word, a pick like that would cause a complete implosion of McCain's entire message.

I like liberman but it would make a disaterous campaign for McCain. He needs somebody who will shore up the base and intrigue the moderates to cross the aisle. Lieberman would bring some across the aisle while alienating the base.

That exactly what I think, too. McCain's strongest argument is that Obama is not ready to lead, but what kind of message does it send when he picks a VP candidate with even less experience than Obama? Obama's camp wouldn't have to say a word about Palin's relative lack of experience--unless, of course, John McCain makes the mistake of mentioning Obama's inexperience during a debate and thus hands Obama a golden microphone moment...

I would have to say again that McCain will only pick Lieberman if he thinks he has no chance of winning as a regular Republican. The Republican base already distrusts him, but he's been able to tack far enough to the right to get them on board. Picking a running mate who is a liberal on everything but the Iraq war would convince his base that they were right about him all along. Unless McCain is trying to pull some sort of Ariel Sharon thing and make a Kadima like party out of the center (of which I see no indication), Lieberman would be a tough choice.

But by in large, I think the VP pick will be harder for McCain than it was for Obama. Many smart picks will alienate some parts of the GOP base.

I agree with one thing and that is it was easy for Obama. All he needed to do was find someone who could teach him what to do should he get elected.

Since they've got 3 joinmt campaign stops scheduled starting with tomorrow and the convention ends in a week, hopefully he will decide a little earlier than that.

Washington Post says it could leak by 6PM tonight... they think the top 4 most likely as Pawlenty, Romney, Lieberman, Ridge, in that order, and also bring up Christine Todd Whitman as a outside possibility... I hadn't really heard anything about her getting the nod before, but there's another possibility for the "woman" angle, and with more experience than Palin and not a senator like Hutchison...

once upon a time, there was a lot of talk about CTW running for pres someday, but she really broke herself off from the Bush admin (a good thing in my view).

I still think she'd make a great choice for McCain... 2 term governor of almost as blue of a state as you can get plus bonus points for quitting from GWB's administration because of Cheney. she's pro-choice, but VP's aren't policy makers.

I think Tom Ridge would make a terrible choice because of his connection to Bush's presidency. McCain really needs someone, if not from outside Washington, who's got no serious connections with GWB.

I think Romney would be decent, he's a great speaker, had a solid campaign and was just everything McCain wasn't.

Though, I have no idea if he's really what the Republican actually want.

Romney is who Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity want, they have convinced some of their followers. The real, working republicans do not want Romney.

Hmm, why are Rush and Hannity promoting Romney? What's in it for them? Who are the "real working republicans" and why do they not want Romney.

By the way, I would be amazed if Lieberman got the nomination. That'd be bizarre.

Everyone in the GOP loves Palin but she's fairly inexperienced (insert Obama joke here), so I don't know if McCain would go for her. If I were a GOP operative, I'd be afraid of Edwardsing her -- she could have a bright future in the party, but once you're known as a losing VP candidate it's tough to come back from that.

I've been thinking it'll be someone boring like Pawlenty or Crist, but then I was saying Bayh all along for Obama and that was wrong, so what do I know?

I doubt Palin.

She is inexperienced, plus she just had a baby. Might be tough to focus on veepeeing with newborn.

Plus we Alaskans like her, a lot (90% approval) - you can't have her yet.

I'm with Fern on this one, makes a lot of sense, plus there's a lot of angry Hillary voters that can be snagged up. The dems have no room to go after her inexperience since their top choice has none. At least McCain could say "she'll be gaining experience as the VP" as opposed to "learning on the job" like Obama. Picking an inexperienced VP doesn't change the fact that McCain has experience and Obama has none, the McCain camp will continue to pound that topic hard.

Consider that most women find more reasons to hate other women than they do to hate other men. I am sure if Palin is picked then the Dems can come up with a good plan if they see the need.

Palin would be awesome! Young and a woman. If repubs are stuck playing identity politics this season because the dems are, then Palin seems to be a great pick.

She looks like Tina Fey, dressed up as a politician in a skit LOL. Solid choice though, going for the "hillary sore loser" vote.

That will really get the Republican base excited!

Or not.

Palin for VP will ensure the GOP base hits their snooze buttons all day long on November 4th.

On a stroll through the break room CNN was talking like this was a done deal. It's an obvious attempt to woo the Clinton voters and give some color to drab old McCain.
