If the Canadian system is that bad, I'm surprised her family wasn't willing to travel further to see a good old-fashioned capitalist doctor.

Do we know it was bad for her family? I did not read the article, but was her family receiving Canadian tax payer funded healthcare, was the family paying out of pocket, or was the families insurance company authorizing a visit to that doctor?

Had the Canadian government been footing the bill her treatment would surely be different that if the doctor was receiving from from an insurance company.

40 years ago, people had insurance and went to the local MD. In her case and many others, the MD happened to live across a boundary line. Up there, the boundary lines are political, not practical.
