I lost mine January 15. Then I stayed on hold for two hours today and finally got an answer.

Try this in your newsreader: news.nash1.tn.home.com .

This is for Nashville, but hopefully it will work for you, too, as I was formerly able to tap into @Home newsgroup servers throughout the country. YMMV.

Available (supposedly) through February 28.

(This is a hot deal, since I've read many complaints on here from people in the same boat as me, and now I'm getting full value again for my $30/month.)

Hmm, when Comcast transferred my home service from home.com to comcast.net, we still were able to access newsgroups with my network settings handled by DHCP and using only "news" as the news server in the news reader settings. Since the default domain was changed with the Comcast transition, I believe we have been accessing news servers on comcast.net.

Posssum, AFAIK, Comcast.net isn't hosting any news servers at the moment. Go into a command prompt and do "tracert news" and I'll bet you'll find that it still points to an @Home server.

Possum, I don't think so. Try "ping news", does it go to 24.x.x.x ?

I'm on Comcast in the Baltimore region, I was switched to comcast.net on January 10, and the "news" hostname still resolves to the old local @home newserver. I believe this USENET server will crap out on or around Feb 28 as scheduled. SO I am cancelling Comcast.net, and getting a new ISP which will provide the full Internet service including USENET... Fortunately there are many options in this dense metro area. And it's easy to ditch their wired cable for satellite TV.

Send Comcast a message. It's easy to switch. http://www.dslreports.com is an excellent resource for finding a high speed ISP that ain't Comcast, that DOES support Usenet newsgroups.

Does anyone actually use newgroups anymore? They're like giant SPAM collectors if you post to one

More free:

TeraNews - free 50mb/day. I use it when my ISP craps out. Considering subscribing but haven't really checked out their system yet.

That's why we have procmail and junkfilter . If you run *nix or your mail is hosted on a *nix system check 'em out. All my spam goes to a spam folder (IMAP) so I can delete when I feel like it. Works very well.

I am on the Comcast@home.com network, and have not switched yet to their own network, but I get tons of software from newsgroups..
so if they remove access to newsgroups, well... I guess I have no choice but to stay with them, because DSL is not available in my area. The reason the DSL companies say is, that our phone lines in my area are fiber, and DSL does not run on fiber, only twisted pair. does not make much sense to me, but it does not have to. I still can not get DSL. Guess its time to subscribe to a newsgroup service.

I was thinking of newsgroups differently: Does anyone buy software anymore?

Besides warez and spam, newsgroups have gigs (per day, literally) of various "stuffs." There are actual discussions going on (newsgroups predated web forums). You can find MP3s, music videos, pr0n... just about anything goes - and gigs of it per day.
