Sardines

sardines are a great and healthy snack. my parents definitely had them in our pantry and so I tried and liked them.

Costco has a nice high quality brand of lightly smoked wild caught sardines. I always keep some on hand for a quick bite.

That portugese sardine store in NYC looks pretty insane though. A store that big dedicated to one country's sardines, plus a couple other proteins.

I had my first can of these with dinner last night. I picked up a case at my local Costco warehouse when they were on sale a couple months ago or so.

They look (opened) like the picture Fritzo showed of choice sardines. There were 3 in the can.

I love canned sardines. The fact they are among the healthier (and cheaper!) food is just a bonus. Generally I like oily fish better than white fish, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.
I buy a Croatian brand (Eva) in a local specialty store, I've tried Portuguese sardines, they're good too, similar style to Croatian ones, I'm just partial to Eva.

Not impressed with Costco, though I've only seen "Brunswick" ones in Canada, not the one linked above.
I've tried kippered herring, but I didn't like it much, that smoky taste ain't my thing.

Yeah Costcos around here has a different brand for a while that was just ok. I think it might have been Brunswick. That one looked above came after.

I didn't realize that some sardines aren't smoked. That would be a different experience for me. I'll have to look around Whole Foods and see what they have. There are some small ethnic grocery stores dotted around the city (pop 100K, so not allot). Most cater to Hispanics and some Oriental.

Also, some are very lightly smoked. Dunno how averse you are to smoking, but some kinds are very subtle. Stay away from Latvian fish. They're heavily smoked ime. I like a lot of smoke.

How was it? I like Squid and Octopus, but I prefer them broiled with some butter.

I was hesitant to buy it, I always have octopus cooked then grilled the Greek way, and calamari fried or grilled. But it was $1.70 so I bought one. I like them, I keep buying them. Those are from Spain
