I was down at South Padre Island when this stuff was washing up. Yeah it covered the beaches and it was impossible to swim without it engulfing you. It wasn't as bad as in those pictures, but it did build up a "wall" that you had to climb over to get the water.

Yah, no. Seaweed does break down quickly though since it's mostly water. Not much left when it dries out.
