We have well over 300 infected here in Hong Kong.

Our company is issuing all employees masks today (some 700 of us).

I believe there have already been cases in SoCal.
If it's in HongKong or China, it'll be in CA in a couple days at the most.

SARS (or its new name CVP or something like that), has spread to China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada (Vancouver and Toronto), and a few other places.

All schools here in HK have shut down for at least a week.

The SARS bug can be caught through ANY contact; the bug can sit around for some 3 hours on surfaces.

They shutdown Wan Chai MTR yesterday as one of the employees there was diagnosed with SARS. Wan Chai is one of the biggest MTR (subway) stations in HK with a throughput of nearly 1 million passengers a day.

This is scary -- I have relatives that regularly visit HK and my parents recently visited them (in the states).

I Tried to order some N95 type masks for my friends and family in Hong Kong since they're all Out Of Stock there, and people are hiking up prices.
The US distributor said all the N95 type masks are OOS Globally.

This is like the first time I've shopped online, and the item is OOS NOT DUE to the AT effect

P.S. for people who wants to buy masks, make sure you get the N95 certified ones, since it stops basically everything. The paper ones don't work that well.

With a mask on? What type of mask like a full gas mask type of thing? Or just like a doctors mask? Where do you live? I wonder if this will be a catching trend with sars spreading the way it is.

Go ahead and invest in the makers of Lysol too....

I think I read something to the effect that SARS can be fatal to one in ten but can make life a living hell for the other nine.

The survival rate is above 90%.

It can make life nasty for you during the period which you recover. Since SARS is a new bug, no one has any antibodies. No resistance means that if you come in contact with the bug, that's it.

first off.... SARS is a virus.... surgical masks DOES NOT HELP to prevent you from contracting it.
the virus is too small and it wont be filtered thru the surgical masks. in otherwords it is useless...

secondly...the main supplier in HK for these masks is 3M..... so if u want to go make some money off ppl being sick and dying u go right ahead.

3rdly....this virus is not airbourne.. in order to really contract it....the person would have to sneeze...while u were around...and get his sneeze on ur hand.... and then u eat with that hand and inject the infected saliva.

the media is blowing it up...the SARS is bad....but its not like u will catch it just by being rite next to someone with SARS..... the chances of actually contracting it is very very low

I don't think the media is blowing it up ... when there's a possibly that over 3000 ppl. infected and they don't have a cure for the sucker then it's their job to get the word out to the world. This is one of the best containment method. Also, if contracting it is very very low as you claim then pls. explain how the virus move so fast internationally? Take case in canada, where 7 people on the same flr. of an infected traveler also contracted the disease. Although, the disease cannot be contracted through airborne means, it does not mean, this is to be taken lightly.

BCSkunk - here's a rebuttal to your comments:

SARS is actually 2 viruses, the combination of the coronavirus which causes common cold & fever, and a virus which causes measles & bumps. Secondly, the disease can be carried through the air by sneezes and coughs (aerosol), therefore a mask can help to prevent inhalation of the virus. The virus can survive in open air for 3 hours, and can be transmitted through contact by hand with contaminated objects and surfaces (e.g. elevator buttons).

N95 spec masks can stop objects up to 0.1 micron, particles 1/10th the size of both Anthrax (4-10 Microns in length & 1-1.5 Microns in width) and Tuberculosis (1-5 Microns in length) at a 99% level of efficiency. Masks prevent carriers from spreading the disease, and people from inhaling the virus.
