SAS HDD - Improper Settings or Faulty?

I'm just getting educated on SAS/SATA/AHCI settings. I originally installed Windows Server 2008 R2 on this SAS and it seemed to work fine. After about a week I was unable to access media over the network. The server had a lot of GUI lag from day 1. I updated all the drivers and firmwares. Same issue. Eventually it wouldn't boot in to Windows.

The SATA disks work fine. I'm not sure if I have the BIOS settings correct. What should be enabled as far as AHCI, SATA, IDE, etc? I have no RAID setup.

I can't format the Cheetah at all. It fails everytime. It can't even chkdsk without formatting. I tried multiple disk scanning programs and it appears to have one bad block.

What do you mean by 'GUI lag'? Are you saying it is drawing the GUI slowly, or, do you mean input lag, as in, you press a button, there is a delay, and then it reacts?

I assume you have already looked in the event viewer and check for any warnings/errors?
If so, what is it telling you?

Windows 10 reacts very slowly. I determined the drive is at fault. The serial number is even corrupted. It's bricked until I find a firmware fix.

That board is pushing the age edge of supporting Windows 10. That board also doesn't have a SAS controller onboard, so what is your SAS drive plugged into?

The backplane/RAID controller/disk controller (LSI 3000 Series SAS controller) has the appropriate hardware for SAS drives. All disks can plug in any bay whether it be SATA or SAS.

The backplane/RAID/disk controller may be an implimented feature of the Intel SR2500 2U chassis. I have two of these actually.


Official Intel Server Board 5000 series drivers, management software, etc have long been done for. The device has one simple job - to share large amounts of data locally. Windows 10 discovered all drivers that adequately suit my needs without disrupting performance. Server 2008 R2 had too many bugs.

Backplane is not a RAID controller. Either you're leaving out information here or you're missing hardware. On the SR2500 chassis, the backplane plugs into a midplane which connects to the mobo using a PCIe x4 bridge board. The SR2500 has two midplane options. The default passive midplane is just a passthrough module which connects to either the SATA ports on the mobo or an add-in RAID card. The active midplane has an LSISAS1068 SAS controller on it. Do you have a picture of your midplane?
