Anyone compete in SASS Cowboy Action Shooting? There is a club near me and I'm thinking of joining. It would be a good excuse to acquire several cowboy guns that I've always dreamed of, not to mention the fun of dressing up and playing cowboy!

My local gun store has two brand new Uberti 1873 Single Action Hombre revolvers in .357 (so I could shoot cheap .38s) going for $379 each. I'm trying to convince myself that I don't really need them, but that's a good price for a pretty fair quality SAA clone. I don't have the money for a Colt, and the Hombre felt better in my hand than the Ruger Vaquero did @ $499.

Dang, if I ever get rich I'm going to buy out most of the Uberti Catalog. I've got no real interest in an AR-15 or a Glock, beyond them being good self-defense tools, but I sure do like old cowboy guns. I hope to own a single shot rolling block or high wall rifle in 45-70 someday, too.

I think my cheapest options for a CAS lever gun is something like a Rossi M92. Then I'll just have to find a double barrel 12 gauge coach gun to round out my competition set.

Of course, CAS shooting requires you come in period costume and adopt an cowboy alias. Luckily, I checked the database and "The Original Greaser Bob" from True Grit is still available.

Lots of fun. Competed a lot back in the day with my pops. We are friends with a lot of the guys that started it.

I was in it back in like 1994-1997, those years. Actually finished first in a lot of the regional comps and twice finished second at End of Trail (thats the big annual event) in the juniors division. One year, they even had me and my dad on the cover of the EoT poster.

I got older and had girlfriends and grew out of it, but it is a really wonderful and supportive community. The only thing that got old for me was the hyper competitiveness of it, but to be fair, that's because i was a young kid that the older guys were stoked on doing well and I probably took it too seriously. If I would have been older and maybe not so competitive it would have had no downsides.

Still get to use my gear for halloween costumes too

That's funny about you getting older and having girlfriends and growing out of the sport. My wife passed last year, and I was just wondering what she would think of a grown man dressing up to play cowboy with real guns, lol! She'd laugh at me.

Looks like a lot of fun

If you're buying new, check out www.wikiarms.com for prices

What holsters/leather are you looking at?

Nice site. I've been using slickguns.com and checking around online a lot. I can't find a better price on a SAA in .357 after I add in the shipping and FFL transfer fee than what my local gun store has.

And used guns are sure going for a premium online. It's often cheaper to shop around and buy new most of the time.

So far no clue on the leather, other than buying something cheap off of ebay to go on an inexpensive leather belt. I'm not going to spend real money on a nice rig unless I find myself doing this a lot.

I think every time Obama says "gun" prices jump about 3%

Gun sales are really increasing, it's crazy.

Wiki Arms is awesome if you're looking for ammo, and it gives you a good idea of what the market price of a given gun is...

There are clubs around my house with cowboys in them too. I hate the part where they smack their junk in your face so no thanks.

I owned a Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt. Nice slick gun with modern internals so it had a firing pin block for safety etc but the sights are nearly useless. Never did any competitive shooting with it and eventually sold it on consignment at a local gun store for basically what I paid for it new.

They are cool guns.
