Is it possible to run SATA HD's on IDE mobo's? can you get converters? and do they run the same?
I am only asking because i am about to purchase a HD and think i would be better off going for SATA 150 because it would be more future proof, please tell me what you think.

The PCI bus is limited to 133Mb/s, not 33Mb/s

I would say that if you want to be future proof and have a SATA drive, go for it. People always told me there was no difference (it is on the PCI bus on the NF7-S too) but when I put in my Hitachi Deskstar 7K250, there was a HUGE difference. Trust me, you will be okay unless you use just about everything imaginable on the PCI bus. I use a NIC card, 1 SATA HDD (fast one too) and an Audigy2 and nothing even comes close to clogging it. The burst rate of around 112Mb/s is a big big boost when it is needed (HDTach shows it around 112Mb/s, +/- 2Mbps).

On a side note, might I suggest you put your rig specs in anandtech's rig profiles...that would be a lot better than having that huge signature.

AFAIK, the PATA->SATA converters(Rockethead, etc) are all designed not only to be used to plug PATA drives in to SATA channel, but can also be used to plug SATA drives in to PATA channels. That said however, due to the cost of a converter(~$20), I'm not aware of anyone actually trying it.

The reason people see differences between the speed of newer SATA drives and older IDE drives is that, well...the SATA drives are newer The data is packed tighter on the disk, the read/write algorythms are probably more fine tuned, meaning it can suck more data off the drive. However, it still hasn't hit the limits of ATA100/133 yet. Burst rates are there or getting there, but sustained data transfer rates are way below the mark.

so basically are you saying i can do it but it will cost me $20, if this is correct then its not really worth it because im already buying a usb 2.0 controller card because my mobo doesnt suppport it, so i might aswell buy a new mobo. I dont really want to upgrade my cpu right now i only have a 1.4 thunderbird. Anyone recommend me a good stable mobo with usb 2.0, SATA, and posibly raid.
Thanks
