no criticism ...

in today's news :

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39034
PIONEER HAS launched a new Blu-ray PC-based drive at a pretty attractive price for enthusiasts.

The BDC-S02, which was pimped out at IDF in China this week, will go for an estimated retail price of $300 which, as anyone watching the news this week will know, is about five quid in real money.

The drive can play standard Blu-ray movies, which will make it a good pairing with a new Radeon or GeForce card to support hardware H.264 decoding. It can also play back and record BD-R and BD-RE discs (both single and dual layer).

good news ... but if you gotta have one now

My parents had an Apple IIe but I didn't do much on it. It had a green monochrome monitor and dual 5 1/4" floppies, right? I don't remember the cost of it though.

At this point and time - HDs are cheaper by far /GB, and probably a lot more reliable.

As for future proofing via more layers, I still recall the issues they're having with current DVD+-Rs in getting a semi-reliable second layer. I'd still go HD until the price comes down to near DVD levels.

Blu-Ray will probably follow suit very quickly after that happens.

Yeah, like this one. It would have helped if you could read as it was posted in this thread and the article stated it's only going to be available in China. :disgust:

*where* do you see it is only available in China?

and since you are the OP, *why* did you say
Possible Hot Deal. Criticize if you like.

i *thought* it meant "discuss"

if i misread your intention, well then - i apologize

but is certainly unclear what you attempted to accomplish here as the entire thread is about OT and somewhat unrelated info

how did i get singled out?

according to theInq article it was LAUNCHED in China with a MSRP of $300 -

i quoted theInq ... *they* say it is a recorder

It can also play back and record BD-R and BD-RE discs (both single and dual layer).

even *your* link says
and is launching it exclusively in China, with other markets to follow later.

Like I said earlier, it's easier to jockey and carry once Blu-Ray disc than 10 DVD's. Also files larger than 8GB will need a bigger disc because file splitting is not too practical.

Easier to carry around is debatable -- carrying a single BR disc sounds simple, but unless BR drives are readily available, you'll also have to lug that PC of yours around to read it.

If you want to be an early adopter, more power to you. But it isn't the big advantage you claim unless plenty of others adopt it... IMO, neither BR or HD DVD will be here long in their current form. Time will tell.
