SATA DVD Drive not Bootable?

My HD died. So, I need to boot to a DVD to reinstall my OS. The problem is, my PC isn't booting to my DVD, despite the fact I have gone into the setup screen and set the boot order to pick CD/DVD first. For some reason, I don't think the PC has ever seen the DVD drive until Windows loads.

So, do I have to hookup some other DVD and use that to install my OS?

What kind of motherboard do you have? Is the SATA setup to act like a IDE?

are you sure the DVD disc is bootable? if not the system will skip the dvd drive and continue to the next boot source

As Tonyyy said, If you have an older motherboard, i.e. sata 1.0 days, then the board itself may have trouble with a SATA optical drive. Even the early SATA 2.0 boards could have some trouble. In which case you may need dig up a working IDE optical drive to reinstall the OS.

Like Tonny has already posted, Is the SATA port set to legacy IDE.

Go into the BIOS and select the SATA port that the drive is connected too and select legacy IDE. Then see if you can see the drive in the BIOS.

If it is an older PC or motherboard, it might not be able to detect a SATA optical device until drivers load from the operating system. This was initially an issue when the devices first came out. Optical devices were not in the initial specifications for the SATA interface, as a result, many initial implementations will not work properly without specific drives loading from the operating system.

Spam the "Boot Menu" button when the computer boots up and see if you can't just select your optical drive.
