I have two Lite on drives, one just a year old and the other about 6 months. I used the first one to burn A LOT of movie DVD's, and just now is failing to read DVD dual layers occasionally. The Liteons do perform very well, but I think this one is on it's last leg. Therefore my search for another brand to replace the Liteon. I am torn between the Samsung, Acer, or another Liteon.

Sometimes I think that all these optical drives are disposable, for the price they are at, just like everything else anymore. Buy it use it and when it fails buy another.

Yeah, I think you're right. Just like those under $100 laser printers that cost the same or less than a replacement toner cartridge (of course I use $10 Ebay refills).

Every drive with a lot of reviews on Newegg is going to have a fair amount of negative reviews because the quality of DVD burners across the board has becoming really hit-or-miss. This is what happens when drive manufacturers have to hit a $25 price point to get drives out the door. It's sort of like hard drives. Everyone has had a bad experience with one brand or the other so you may as well just buy the cheapest (with a decent warranty) and hope for the best.

I recently bought a new Lite On SATA burner from Newegg and ran into problems (CD burn errors, DVD reading errors, taking forever to read my Crysis disk). The errors were intermittent. I had put the older IDE burner it replaced in my wife's machine and it didn't experience the same problems (i.e. I would take a DVD that the new burner choked on, put it in my wife's machine, and using the exact same ripping program have no troubles at all). I recently had to reinstall windows on my machine and the Lite On got about halfway through the process and then decided it didn't want to read some of the files from the install CD. Install failed.

So I opened up a brand new IDE HP burner I had purchased last year as an X-mas present that I never gave. It got substantially further in the install process but eventually stopped reading files as well. So I took my older IDE burner out of my wife's machine, reinstalled it in mine, and now things are fine again. The install disk is in perfect condition (it's been in a drive fewer than a dozen times). Fortunately, these drives are so cheap that if you get something that doesn't work you won't get too badly burned (no pun intended).

I would really like to get a good SATA burner for my machine. I started this process (replacing my functional IDE burner) because my new 8800GT card is so long it blocks one of my IDE connectors and I have a Linux setup on a hard disk that is connected to the other IDE connector. If I can't find a decent SATA burner, I'll have to figure out how I can connect both the hard drive and burner to the same IDE cable (I'll probably need an adapter to fit a hard drive in a 5.25" bay.

I wouldn't expect it either, but... BITD the Samsung drives "officially" came with Nero. It was in the pictures and in the description. However, as now, some people got Nero and some didn't. I ordered two and didn't. I complained to Newegg and they gave me a $10 credit and told me to use that to buy the software. Then, soon after, the description and pictures changed.

See this thread and search for my post on 11/13/2006 02:24 PM.

Edited. I think this is happening to some degree in any industry. Penny pinching, cost cutting...

True, but in many (if not most) industries, there is generally some option to pay a higher price for better quality. I don't know that this is the case with DVD burners. Even Plextors (which used to be the gold standard) are now more often than not rebadged crap (just sold with the old Plextor premium price). Even in the hard drive industry (where you can buy more expensive "enterprise" drives), there are empirical studies (like Google's) that show that the price premiums rarely translate into a longer lasting drive. I would willingly pay 2-3 times the cost of this Sammy drive if I knew the drive would work.

Heh, I finally ordered... two of them. I don't see them getting much cheaper anytime soon, so they're just as spares right now.

thanks, in for one, I have been trying to burn media DVDs (homemade movies) and my DVDs don't seem to be readable by any DVD player.
I'm using quality media and have tried different types, so I suspect he burner or the burning software. I tried bth Imageburn and InfraRecorder with no luck, so maybe it's the burner.

I ordered one Sunday and then another Tuesday around 1PM Central Time. Both arrived today via standard UPS stop-drop-n-roll delivery and so far both are working perfectly. :Q

There is another deal at NE for basically the same drive but with PATA for $3 less, including shipping of course. While it's not SATA it's a fair deal for someone willing or needing the same burner with PATA for $30 delivered, but I think it would have to be a need. SATA is the way to go for those who have the option and can find a good drive. My LG's PATA ended up being a PITA.

Compare them here.
