hi guys,

How do I transfer data from my old IDE hard drive (140GB) data (which contains Win XP Home) to a new SATA Hard disk . Im using I875BZ (canterwood). In other words replacing an old hard drive with a new one so that i can boot SATA drive from my PC and the IDE hard drive as the second hard drive.

Any Bios setting or preparation i need to do?

thanks guys

Simple. First, I am assuming you are doing a clean install on the new serial ata hard drive. If not, the solution would be a bit different. First, get the serial ata drive up and running. Once that is all done, hook up the ide drive, go into bios and make sure that it is set to boot from serial ata, not ide. Then just boot up to the serial ata drive, look in my computer, and all your data from the ide drive should be there as another drive letter.

In case you want to make an exact copy of the old drive and also boot up from the new drive, you can follow johnjkr1's steps and then use a software like Norton Ghost to copy the HD contents on to the new drive, bit by bit.

What exactly do you want to know about raid? First, you must have two hard drives of the same connector type (2 serial ata or 2 parallel ata). It sounds like you do not have two drives.

well i dont know how to setup the raid. If u can recommend me some guideline it will be appreciated...^_^

Curently i have one SATA 250GB and one IDE 120 GB hard disk.I plan to buy another SATA 250GB hard disk. Assume that i have already brought it, i want the new SATA hard disk to be set as an operating system. The old IDE 120GB currently contains my Operating System. So i would fear that once i hooked up everything that the old OS will clash with new installed once.

Ok, to clear things up. OS's cant "clash". Only one can be run at a time, so whichever one boots is in charge. The other OS will just show up as data on something like drive "D".

As for raid, let us assume you now have 2 250gb serial ata hard drives. This is what would happen. For the time being, remove the 120gb ide drive. Plug in both serial ata drives. First, you would have to enter the raid bios and tell it what type of RAID you want ("0" or "1" and stripe size). You would boot up to the winxp cd, press F6 to add addtitional drivers, give it your RAID drivers, then it would look like a normal winxp install from that point on. The two 250gb drives would act as one. When you get everything installed, you can plug the ide drive back in and grab your data.

Thank you very much for clearing things up , Im relief. When i setup the Raid '0' or '1', lets say '0' then how about the stripe size what does it mean? What would the size should i set?

After setting this RAID , will it damage or make my other 250GB which contains data and partition to be disappeared?

thanks

First off, if you do not start off with raid, you can't go back and add it. It would destroy your old 250gb install. I would recommend you stay away from raid unless you reall need the speed (video editing is about the only thing that really needs it). Raid 0 is striping, it spreads your data accross two drives for very fast access. Of course, if one hard drive breaks, you lose everything. Raid 1 is mirroring. In Raid 1 a copy of your main drive is immediately sent to your second drive. If the first drive dies, the 2nd just takes over. There is no speed benefit to raid 1 and there can be a performance hit in many cases.
