Some folks have suggested using a combo power/data SATA connector, carefully making the connections and then potting the whole thing in epoxy to keep it from moving.

Yep, that's what you want. Along with a locker where you can secure your components, something your mates can't get in.
Buy him a large Babble Ball. It's more entertaining than playing with a HD and much less expensive.
It will keep him occupied for hours!

Another alternative would be to buy a bad HD (bad platters, motor or heads), and switch the boards.

Not that easy im afraid.

There are adaptives stored on Flash chips on the boards that are critical to the drive.

It may have worked in the 90s, but not anymore.

How about having your roomie replace the drive? HDDs are too cheap to bother repairing. As long as the connection is good, you can tape the cable to the drive so it doesn't come loose. The cable is basically expendable.

Yeah, I had the same thing happen with a Seagate 320GB, the connector broke off inside the cable. My solution was just to keep using that cable and wedge it in there. You can, in fact, continue this forever, as long as you don't break the pins off.

Same thing happened to my WDC 320gb - I just very carefully inserted the pins back into the cable and epoxied the cable on. Been using it for about 2 and a half years like this.
