SATA HD "Safely Remove Hardware"?

I recently put together a new machine with a Seagate Barracuda 160GB SATA hard drive. It works great but I get the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the lower right of my taskbar and it's reading the drive.

I haven't attempted to stop/remove it. Is this supposed to happen? If not anyway to get rid of it?

Thanks!

Aren't SATA drives technically hot-swappable? That's why you're seeing it in the safely remove hardware option. I too would like to get rid of the icon though, since I don't think I'll be removing my hard drives any time soon.

That happened to me on a test machine, so I tried to stop it and got a message "cannot stop disk in use" or some such. It was my only main drive though.

That is why it is there. SATA drives are hot-swappable, and if you have your system set properly, you can just ignore that icon.

Is there a way to not have it show up? I suppose I can set it to "always hidden" in the tray options, but I sometimes use a USB drive. Can I just tell windows to not allow me to remove the two SATA drives, but sho the icon if another (removable) drive is inserted?

Also...my previous computer was running on SATA as well, and I never saw the remove hardware option -- any idea why?

You can set each device to be hot plugged without using that icon or its function. In Device Manager, right click on the device (SATA drive in this case) and in Properties, check Policies and allow quick removal.

"Click Optimize for quick removal to disable write caching on the storage device and in Windows. This allows you to remove the device without using the Safely Remove Hardware application, but can have an impact on the performance of the device."
