that's a nifty little thing.

Just a note to those that just look at the pic, it is a *single* device converter (either way) only, not two.

I've ordered a ton of stuff from DealExtreme and received them after like, 3 weeks. But I always got what I ordered. Bump for DealExtreme and their tons of cheap stuff.

Why are there two SATA connectors on it?

< from one of the reviews >

Other Thoughts: Hard-to-read instructions make it clear that if you're plugging the device into an IDE drive, you cable the SATA1 port to your SATA controller. If you're plugging the device into an IDE motherboard, you cable the SATA2 port to the SATA drive.

< a better solution is one of those new PCIe x1 IDE Raid Controller
cards , but they cost $30 to $90 delivered >

DrShivas, This converter has two modes of operation, and the mode of operation determines which SATA port you use on the converter.

If you are converting an IDE hard drive to a SATA interface, you plug the IDE connector on the converter into the IDE port on the hard drive, and connect a SATA cable between your motherboard and SATA1 on the converter. SATA2 on the converter will be unused.

If you are converting a SATA hard drive to an IDE interface, you connect a SATA cable between the SATA connector on the hard drive and SATA2 on the converter, and (it looks like) you plug the IDE connector on the converter directly into an IDE port on your motherboard (there won't be a cable between the converter and the motherboard). SATA1 on the converter will be unused.

Ah, thanks for the explanation, MisterE. Makes sense now. And thanks tomatom for pointing out the review.

Hm, how does the price compare to elsewhere? I found my old Serillel and tried hooking up my hard drive but my computer won't boot. I don't whether it's the Serillel, my hard drive (dead? jumper setting?), or some flag I need to set in my BIOS. Thought I'd mention in case one of you had experience with it.

Wait, nevermind. I'm a retard. I just had to switch the jumpers from slave to master.

If you have one of those new-fangled power supplies that doesn't have 4-pin molex connectors, you'll need to waste like $10 on an adapter, like I did. The only power adapters I could find were the "LP4SATAFM" (http://www.amazon.com/LP4-Sata...dapter/dp/B000NPKGGU/) and the "ABS SATA To Molex Power Adapter" (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16812263002).

Be very careful with these devices... I had a different one (2 actually)... More circuit-board-y... Anyhow, it corrupted my hard drive. Unreliable. System would freeze using Sisoft Sandra....

I don't know if this device is better or not.

Using this to hook up a PATA drive to a SATA controller: what are the implications regarding speed? Could one successfully use this to hook up a PATA drive with a SATA drive in a RAID configuration on a SATA controller?

That is exactly what I would like to do! Has someone tried this?

I probably would not do this unless I were merely running a RAID0 configuration (software would be better in most cases for this case) or running a RAID1 configuration in temporary mode for a backup.

Why? Because for RAID this adds one too many potential errors into the system for my personal comfort. (You may feel differently, but this is my opinion)

I agree with LURKER1 .

DO NOT USE THIS WITH A RAID PURPOSE

The whole idea of Raid is to redundantly write to

different sources at the same time . This device

must induce a unwanted time delay which will

probably corrupt the image .

Most Raid setups recommend IDENTICLE HDDs .
