SATA, just an illusion?

Anyone seen any Serial ATA drives besides the 80GB Seagate Barracuda? Anyone know when they're going to be readily available? Sizes? I did the Intel retailedge deal, so my mobo has SATA-RAID, and I really really want that 300MB/s of bandwidth, but I most certainly don't want a 160GB striped drive, that's just pointless to have as a primary drive.

SATA is limited by the PCI bus, and right now the read/write times are nearly identical to PATA.

BUT, serial ata on an nforce mobo is a better option than the native controllers and offers better airflow,...

Im takin the jump and buying a few adapters to check it out

I found it more responsive, HDT benchmark (ok I know this doesn't really mean anything) show low CPU utilization w/ off chart read bust speed.
HD Defrag seems too be much faster, I mean MUCH faster.

Onboard SATA seems to be faster than PCI card.

i'm waiting for review of the KT400A board to be released. it'll have the 8237 southbridge-which has SATA integrated directly into it.
then it won't be limited by the PCI bus anymore
but then again, VIA's IDE controllers are not that good

but if SATA does not bring improved performance, it'll still have low cpu utilization and smaller cables
edit: i know there is virtually no increased performance with SATA due to the limitations of the hard drive itself

SATA is limited by platter speeds, not the PCI bus. Though SATA on the Intel ICH5 and VIA 8237 will not be on the PCI bus anyway. It took years to beat it into people's heads that ATA66/100/133 is irrelevant and now it's all going to start again with the 150MB/s thing.

Exactly. Since the current best drive on the markety maxes @ ~59MB/Sec (Avg 44MB/Sec) ATA66 isn't even in danger. Now when the 10k rpm SATA drives come out this summer we'll see some VERY nice changes. But people still won't understand why it isn't a full 150MB/Sec

(Just because the bus has bandwidth headroom doesn't mean our drives are able to fill it people!)
